Old Man Yardages

Well....after a couple of Trackman sessions I now have a grasp of yardages for my bag. To be fair, not a lot comes as a surprise as I knew I'd lost a bit of yardage over the last couple of year, however, was somewhat shocked by my utterly pedestrian swing speed...was expecting Driver speed to be at worst something in the high 80's but no...its down as low as its ever been.

Looks like I can leave the driver at home until the summer when it will roll out more than the Mini and just need to find a solution to blend the 6i/5h yardages into one club...maybe a 9 wood is in my future :ROFLMAO: ...though I might first go and get the 6i loft checked as it launches very low. For some reason the system didn't recognise my AoA for the irons. I just wish the Trackman portal gave you direct access to your stats, instead of doing everything via the mobile phone app which doesn't allow you to filter out any obvious bad shots (if you've forgotten to delete them at the time)

Interestingly, at the end of the session, although tired to the point of not swinging as consistently as I could have, I hit some additional shots with driver, using my current ball of choice the Wilson Triad and my previous, previous ball, the Callaway Chrome Tour

Despite a clubhead speed slower by 1.5mph I actually got 3mph more ball speed, 150rpm more spin and 4 yards more carry, out of the Chrome Tour. Next session I'd like to do is take a selection of different balls and hit them with Driver, 7 iron and wedge to see what might give this aging swing a bit more assistance.

There comes a time when we have to accept that we no longer have the ability to hit as far as we used to
Over the years (about 45) my 7 iron distance has gone from 180 to current 120.

Not being a knob here, I’ve recently started lessons and so I’ve been trying to understand the numbers I’m being shown, some of these look familiar!

Angle of attack is decent with ‘woods’ being a positive number. Club path also negative so is this an out to in swing path, adding spin/cutting across?

Pretty much bang on. I generally play a soft fade, starting the ball left of the target line.

I had the same problem with Angle of Attack at the indoor Trackman I went to recently - got no numbers for that at all. Weird.

Also related to something you said - I'm sure there used to be a more detailed, in-depth version of Trackman as I recall having an entire report emailed to me, in which I could select and edit data. But the one I went to this time was just set-up the same as the outdoor Trackmans, so there was less info, and as you said, just went into my phone app rather than emailing a full report. There must be two versions of Trackman software available to these places.

First of all bloody good thread and really good data set for us all to see and understand 👏.

Looking at it you mate as well bin the driver completely as the Mini is just holding up better and the low spin numbers on the driver plus lack of speed suggests it’s falling out of the air(my assumption). Maybe if you could get that spin numbers up nearer the Mini you may eke out some more carry and overall distance.

I’m intrigued as to what shafts are you using, perhaps a lighter spec could again combat some of those numbers.

Regardless though I love what you’ve done, getting your spin and Trackman data you know exactly what club does what unlike the literally thousands of club golfers that insist they hit a 7 iron 150+ carry when in truth they’re nearer your numbers.

I did a gapping session last year on GCquad so have my data but I’d like to do it again when I get home as I want to add a Mini driver and a new driver, plus swing changes I’ve made so it would be good to get the numbers again

You are right...I used to be able to log on on-line and see my data and it would show trajectories and stuff, you could deselect individual shots and the averages would automatically change.

I dont know if at the end of the session it is possible to create a report that then gets uploaded to your online account and then that forms the data that you can manipulate.

I'd like to be able to import the stats into excel to be able to do more indepth analysis and manipulation of the data rather than relying on what someone else tells me is important....if nothing for the simple reason that you can see an entire data set on one page, rather than keep having to scroll left/right/up/down on a small mobile screen.

Yeah, it was definitely a different level of software. This time I was using the 'map my bag' function where you just record 6 successful shots with each club. But in the one I did before you could hit as many shots as you like with each, and as you said, edit the data later on in the report - which was viewable on desktop.

This 'map my bag' in the phone feels like a lite version of it.

How does Trackman work out the average? Is it just the total distance divided by the number of shots (mean) or the more accurate way of calculating it by using the median and looking at the distance that is hit most often? There could be quite a big difference between the two numbers.

Its a simple average...so you have to delete and truly awful shots to remove "stupid" data to get meaningful averages. Yes...if you are particularly variable in your shot length then there could be some variation.

I think I would just add some loft to both the driver and mini driver as they are not optimal for your delivery.. if that’s possible ?
You could set up for a draw to get a more in to out path with a stronger grip .. watched one of the 70+ yr old boys doing this on Wednesday was very effective he was using a TSi1 lightweight driver as well .. he was getting some nice distance. (Edit: but looking at your path numbers I am a little confused is that post or pre impact - either way 5 degrees-/+ is large and perhaps a session on reducing that number will be beneficial)

Thanks Nick. Good post. Am not going to add a lot as most things are above my pay grade but your descent angle for 6 and 7 iron does not look good. For those clubs I am sure you need them in the 40’s.

Look at the descent angles in the Ping chart and Nick's descent angles are right in the range for his swing speed with those clubs. Increasing the swing speed would be required to get into the 40's, and that's a difficult proposition (my data would be similar to Nick's). It's depressing to try and hit a 6 iron to the green and thinking it will carry the bunker(s) and still stop on the green!

Theres a youtube channel.
AskGolfNut.
Does club reviews.
Then gets all techy at end, so dont recommend if not into figures like that.
But, he always says, descent angle to be in 40s, otherwise a ball won't stop on the green.
Once the angle is under that, thats when you should be ditching those irons beyond that for alternatives....hybrids or woods.
