Oh Dear Ernie!

He called it snakes in his brain.

If you have that problem then it would be worth checking each line and actually trying to line up properly on each putt. It can't hurt.

The last 4 putts should have been taps ins, and maybe Ernie didn't take enough care over them. However it is short putts that you should really make that seem to bring on the yips. When mine were at their worst I could miss one foot putts quite easily, due to a stabby putting stroke! :(

I'm not disputing the existence of the yips. I'm saying even with the yips that should've been a 3-putt at worst & some of his peers are just being kind to him with their comments & probably thinking something completely different

For those that haven't noticed, watch the video again and watch his hands at impact. Looks like he's trying to bowl an off break how much his right twitches.

Maybe better off one handed on the tap ins?

I feel for him. It wasn't lazy, or unprofessional. He said after that he physically couldn't take the putter back. As region says above, his right hand was twitching so so bad. Hence, he had a mental block and tried to back hand the putt in etc etc.

The yips are a terrible thing. I played with a guy from work once who hit a putt from 2 feet and he actually hit the ball twice his right hand yipped so badly. He played off 9 and almost quite as a result of it.

I'd need to watch again

Well at least you are right on that bit and if you had ever seen someone with the genuine yips you would know that Ernie's actions, including his stroke, were consistent with that condition.

I don't think its anything to laugh at or indeed find it remotely funny. As I understand it, it's a case of there but for the grace of God go anyone of us. For a forum of golf lovers I would have thought it would be viewed with more concern and dare I say empathy?
The very next green he sank a monster putt and every single one of us knows, that's golf. It's a game with the ability to provide a player with the most unbelievably embarrassing situations. We have all been there, but not with billions watching. It's a credit to him that he carried on and completed the remaining 17 holes in 2 over.
Els is a great champion, maybe yes, another one with his best days behind him, but I back him to get over this and I for one will be delighted when he does.

I don't know of anyone suffering from them but at least I know how to spot them now, they'll be balanced on one foot and hitting backhanders. Truly a terrible condition to have

The close up of the first putt of this sequence (not sure if he's had a long putt to get there or not) they zoom in on the Yes brand, maybe they should rename it No? Bet the company were going Noooooo, could there be a breach of contract with Yes for putting like such a fool and making the brand look bad? That clip could be shown for years. I had one of those many years ago (or a very similar Yes model), couldn't putt with it either.;)

waiting for my 'ridiculous post of the year' nomination.....again!:(

You could hear not a sound
As the putt stayed above the ground
The patrons all went quiet
The worst start to a round
He walked towards the second tee
Clutching his hand upon his chest
His name was Ernie
And he was the worst putter in the west

Now Ernie had an ambition
A green jacket on his back
But being six over after one hole
He needed another tack
They said he had no chance to make the cut
He might as well walk off the course
But he rolled in a long putt on the 5th
And was back on his birdie horse
His name was Ernie
But he was the worst putter in the West

I'll stop now ....

The yips are a proven medical condition??? Really??

I like ernie, he's a fantastic guy but I have very little sympathy for him in this instance, no way should a top tour pro miss from inside 3 feet 6 times. No way, he should have taken his time to mark and read his putt or do whatever he does instead of just hitting it in the general direction of the hole. Standing on one foot, leaning over the hole to putt etc.
Doesn't matter what he's done or what he does in the future this is what people will remember about him unfortunately.

As I said you need to look again.

Only the last two were standing on one foot or backhanded.

So, forgetting those, four putts from three feet with a twitch like an electric shock is sufficient evidence of the yips.

Im with you on this one.
Even when he missed the 5th one back handed he finished it off backhanded also.
His caddie was partly to blame also as he should of stepped in and told him to mark it and reset,in fact Ernie should have been sensible enough to do that.

How many times have you or someone you have seen reached over to "just finish it off" with one foot off the ground or way behind the other foot or even on one foot and missed and have thought "what a numpty" I should have marked it.

I don't give gimmies purely because some people missed short putts purely down to lack of concentration and imo that was also part of it.

I think he only actually took 6 putts! However that still equals my worst number of putts on one green, when I had a bad attack of the yips a few years ago! :(

I managed to 6 putt the opening hole at Burley once! Going back there on Monday to get my own back!
