• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Not Welcome

You'd be welcome with open arms - scramble team work best with a mix of abilities. A high handicapper who might chip in with one or two holes of a net birdie or eagle is always welcome, especially if the team has a low handicapper who can grind out the pars.

Play - it's a great fun format and you have no pressure to break 100, just do well on the odd holes.

what a chopper! People like that need sorting out and disgracing publicly. Pompous pr**k You'd be welcome at our place most of the seniors have never got below 100 in fact most of us others rarely have either!

Thank you everyone, for your responses. I telephoned the Seniors' Captain and told him that my name stays on the list and I expect to be in a team. The T/S is over two weeks away and I will let you know what happens.

I certainly feel much happier now.

What was his response to this?

I could kind of understand the argument about weakening the team for a foursomes event, but a scramble? Pair you with a low handicapper it doesn't matter if you don't "contribute" a single shot! Not that it matters anyway. Well done for standing your ground. I hope you chip in with the round of your life and contribute a few decent shots!

I agree with those that have said you should keep your name on the list.
To ask you to withdraw based on your handicap is rude, unneccesary, not in the spirit of the game or in the spirit of a golf club.
You've paid your money, you should get to play.

My natural instinct would be to tell the person to F-off, but I think being the bigger man is a stronger stance in this instance. You wouldn't want to give the club any opportunities to make you look like the villain here.

Good luck, enjoy the scramble and keep us updated on how it turns out.

Without looking at me he said "the names mcdonald youu can call me Major" to which i said the names Kirk you can call me captain. He picked up his ball and reported me to the captain (ex ryder cup player) for dissent !!! What ?

 Brilliant!!!!

On the thread subject what an absolute pillock.

What was his response to this?

His response was that he thought that I would find too much pressure in being the weakest player in the team. I believe this is his excuse. Being told that I was "welcome to play singles, but not team comps", makes me think that one or two bandits may have spoken to him.

I am feeling rather depressed at the moment. I have been playing golf for six months and play with the Seniors and I have yet to break a hundred. I play in the monthly singles comps and put my name down for a Texas Scramble. The Seniors Captain told me today that I would not be welcome as I would be weakening the team that drew me. Do I take my name off the list?

We have a guy who has been playing less than a couple of months, hasn't got his handicap yet and, up until last week, hadn't played a full 18 holes with a score well over 30 over mar but we still had him play in a Texas comp last Tuesday evening.
He may not have been knocking them stone dead or sinking every putt there was but he did make some great contributions to the team.
TS is a great game to start building someones confidence as there is normally a good ball played by someone in the team and it gives the new players a great buzz when it's theirs. It's also a great social game when new members get to meet different players.
As has been said before turn up and if you're not allowed to play or the players you're picked to play with have a bad attitude towards you then leave and find a club like ours where everyone is welcome and we have a right good laugh.

Being told that I would not be welcomed in playing a Texas scramble would make me even more determined to play and make him eat his own words , I really , really hate attitudes like this when people start playing the game they are not naturally good at the game but should be encouraged at every opportunity.

As long as they are putting some effort in to improving their game then it is perfectly reasonable to include them in activities they are comfortable in taking part. It is difficult enough to find the courage to join with other players that are a bit better than yourself but by doing so you improve your course management skills and therefore improve as a result.

Bad attitude by your Seniors Captain.
Best to let your clubs do the talking.

In a scrabble all you need to do is hole one lucky putt in 18 holes and that can make a huge difference to the team.
Remember the team are benefiting from your strokes so put on your best D.Day spirit and shut the miserable sod up.

Good on yer mate, there's always one knob in every walk of life.

I would be reporting the conversation and his response to the club now. Irrespective of whether he decides whether to let you play it is a shocking attitude. Complain that you've forked out not an insignificant amount of cash to be a member and expect full playing rights as a result. Ask them what they plan to do about it and I would point the club to this thread

Turn up and play with a putter only :D

His attitude is a disgrace

Personally I'd be worried about joining a club that thinks it necessary to have a 'Seniors Captain' in the first place :)

As Seniors Captain of my club, I wonder who runs The Merchants seniors section?

We, the Seniors, turn out as big a field each Friday as the club does every Saturday. The match secretary and I have a busy diary organising our weekly comps, our representative matches v other clubs and seniors outings.

Perhaps The Merchants may have a full time staff to carry out this organising or maybe you don't embrace your seniors as we do but for us, this seniors captain position is very necessary and our club is very welcoming with no requirement to worry about joining us!

Keep your name on the list and dont back down no matter what , no need for me to comment on the captain other then he should stand down after his comments ..............................EYG

An update to the thread. Played the Texas Scramble today and the team came third. Five of my drives were nominated, including the 17th and 18th holes where they were the 'best' balls, so I didn't disgrace myself.

Other club members, who are not Seniors, have heard about the Senior Captain's comments to me and been very supportive, just like the members of the Forum. Thank you.
