I am feeling rather depressed at the moment. I have been playing golf for six months and play with the Seniors and I have yet to break a hundred. I play in the monthly singles comps and put my name down for a Texas Scramble. The Seniors Captain told me today that I would not be welcome as I would be weakening the team that drew me. Do I take my name off the list?

Leave your name up their, everyone has to start somewhere and you will only get better and have more confidence by playing.

I think it is quite rude of anyone to suggest that and certainly would not expect the from someone who holds a captains role at the club.

Something that is beside the point, you will probably made the team stronger as you will be giving the more handicap to play with.

NO turn up and play with whoever your picked with if they dont like it STUFF THEM your a member so entitled to play.

No don't take your name off the list. Then if you don't play kick up an almighty stink. Although I would be tempted to tell them to shove their membership and go somewhere that at least makes you feel welcome.

Tell the seniors captain, your as member, just like he is a "MEMBER". And that you are playing, its not as if a scramble is the pinnacle of golfing comps after all. And thank him for being so welcoming and how you hope you get his team as you will make sure you cock it up if you do get drew with him.

He's not off 28 by any chance is he, a bandit that doesn't want a true high handicapper playing with him?:D

Or you could just ignore him, and chalk it up to him being a total knob, and dont speak to him again, and just keep calling his rich in front of his cronies as it sound like he will have a few.

Would not happen in our Vets Section, you play other clubs and all are welcome.
Poor show from Seniors Captain I feel.
Do not withdraw your name, tough it out and keep practising.
Our vets games, while competitive, are also social meets.

Agree with this.

Extremely poor show telling you that you wouldn't be welcome.

That's one of the most appalling ways of treating a new member I think I've ever seen. What better way to integrate someone who's new to the game than a "friendly" scramble? Good chance to see how others approach the game and a really good opportunity to learn something as a new player rather than playing in proper comps. Just ignore him, try your best and maybe explain to him afterwards what you got out of the day. I really hope you get drawn with him and play out of your skin!

I've heard some bad things done in the name of golf but this is absolutely outrageous!

I'd complain to the Club and I'd turn up and expect to play. If they don't want whoever puts their name down then they should be allowed to put the whole team on the sheet at the outset.

I bet if you ask the guys you end up playing with, they'll be more than happy to have you on their team. They won't expect you to play well on every hole - I wouldn't expect to play well on every hole. I'd gladly have you on my team, irrespective of handicap. I play for fun, not for a living, and a few people need to be reminded of why we play this game.

Leave your name up in big bold letters - stuff him!

Don't sweat the small stuff. Theres knobs everywhere. I used to belong to the most archaic golf club ever, juniors were scum and to this day no ladies allowed. 2 events stick in my memory. Upon some knob signing up to play with me in a medal I was trying to make eye contact with who i thot he was. He ignored me and went to the first tee. So i followed. Without looking at me he said "the names mcdonald youu can call me Major" to which i said the names Kirk you can call me captain. He picked up his ball and reported me to the captain (ex ryder cup player) for dissent !!! What ?

3 yrs later and i'm in the junior club championship with about 80 senior members watching this guy cuts in and tees off the 14th when we and the crowd were on the 13th green. When I asked him whats going on he said "Youre a junior arent you" and walked past us - NOT ONE OF THE SENIOR MEMBERS WATCHING SAID ANYTHING.

Like I say knobs r everywhere

I would definitely report the matter to the club. What a horrid man they have as a captain.

Golf clubs are not in a position these days to lose members and this idiot behaving like that will do exactly that for your club.

Its texas scramble FFS, not the ryder cup. Leave your name where it is and i so hope your team beat his.

Consider that you misheard him and leave your name down. This individual's view is very unlikely to be held by many,if any, of those you will play with. I can almost guarantee that you will be made more than welcome in the team you are part of. And you will contribute - even as a backup and in showing to others the line of putts (even if it's the wrong line that you show them ;) ) Fret ye not.
