Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

Now then ladies if you're gonna have a little tiff then do it on PM's as you've hijacked the OP's thread

NOOOOO - dont do it in PM's, start a new thread if you must, this is the sort of thing we all need to see :p

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

I think that's the exact problem which too many golfers exhibit - too worried about their handicap and not enough about their golf. Luckily, I'm free from all that nonsense and can just concentrate on playing.

As for the non-offensive comment - you're the one calling me "timmy", as does the Homer gang. I suppose it makes you feel important that you can ridicule? Not that it particular bothers me, but it is interesting to see how people have reacted to my presence over the last few months. Some people are friendly and offer encouragement, others want to ridicule, and some are plain abusive. What you say about me tells me more about your character.

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

Tim - About 6 weeks ago, I played 16 holes one evening in 'Scratch', Level Par, and without thinking about it really.

Never done it before, and might never again.

However, do I,...... as a '10 Handicap' golfer,.... EVER feel I will get to an official 'Scratch' Handicap ?

There is more chance of Cheryl Cole knocking at my front door, wearing nothing but Lace top Holdups & a G string, and murmering huskily 'I need you.....' than me ever getting close.

Anyone who thinks they will do it in a year has no chance. You have slightly more chance Tim, but only slightly. Wrong side of 30 I hear......or was that 40.........

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

What you don't realise is that I have bags of natural talent.

You may very well have bags of talent but the scale of the challenge to achieve a scratch handicap is colossal purely in terms of the maths.

For someone to move from a handicap of 5.4 to scratch, they need to shoot 50 shots under their handicap assuming they play to their handicap or better every time they have a card in their hand. Even if you are shooting level par gross every time, that is still 22 rounds before you get a scratch handicap.

That is a huge amount of very very high quality golf on a totally consistent basis. It would be an incredible achievement to get from 5.4 to scratch in a season let alone from any higher. Not least because would you have enough opportunities to play that many rounds of golf in competition?

To me, personally, scratch standard is a meaningless description.

Scratch is scratch and that's that.

Shooting a level par round even on a vaguely consistent basis is difficult but not especially challenging for a very good golfer.

I know plenty of Cat 1 handicappers who can shoot level par or better but they are not and will never hold a scratch handicap or even close to it. I even know a few Cat 2 handicappers who can shoot level par or better now and again but they will probably never make Cat 1 let alone scratch.

I'm right behind anyone who wants to be as good as they can be whatever that standard might turn out to be - whether scratch, single figures, shooting a level par round, breaking 80, 90 or even 100. Good luck and go for it.

But, all these blogs about getting to scratch in a year are just utter crap and born out of ignorance of the volume of top quality golf that has to be played to get to a scratch handicap.

Quite probably the biggest load of tosh i have read on the forums yet. Planet tim must be a great place to be. :D

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

Deary me, you really do have a chip on that slopey shoulder.

I don't know why people feel so bitter about their golf. If it causes you that much distress then you should give up.
Tim i think you took OS post personaly when it wasnt meant that way . it was used as a comparison thats all .. Chris is one of the few guys on here i have played golf with & i must say he is a good golfer .. Brendy is off 8 (non gps assisted :D) smange is a cracking golfer off 9 .. yet none of these selected few are on saying how far they hit the ball or how quick they will get to scratch .. i play off 9 & can play a bit.. will i ever get to scratch .. not likely mate.. geting to 10 quicker than im geting to 8.. not one of us are bitter about our golf & where some shots or rounds cause us distress, golf itself doesnt , we belong in the REALISTIC world . if these non golfer to scratch in a year golfers are that good they should stick at it for 2 years & win a major while they are at it ,, even more puzzling to me is why they would think i would have any intrest in reading about them (complete stranger to me) doing so .. they wana do it ? fine .. write a blog ?? why ? Good luck with your golf.. To the origional poster fair play to you giving up your job to do this , might i ask (feel free not to answer)how do you think guys on here that lost their jobs & are looking for work would feel bout that? secondly how with no income do you plan to pay for your golf & support yourself for that year ..

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

My question is this:

Once a golfer gets to scratch (official handicap) then it opens up a whole world of comps that normal club golfers of a higher handicap could never enter. Competitions such as Open qualifying and the English Amateur Championship. The guys at my club who are off scratch do their upmost to keep their scratch handicap so that they can enter these comps.

Tim, once you're playing to a scratch level (and I'm not sure how that's quantified without an official handicap), what are you going to do? Will you give up golf and take up another challenge or push on to plus figures (theoretically)? Or, would you then put your three cards in?

That's three questions actually. Sorry. :D

Dont worry he will just ignore you if you ask an awkward question.

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

I object to being moved Out of Bounds. Who can I complain to?

@Auburn: I have no answer to any of your questions - I've never really considered.

I'll update the forum when I have three consecutive level par (or sub par) rounds.

Until then will you keep posting to tell us length is king and everything else does not matter? Or will you actually post sensible things and sensible answers

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

I'll update the forum when I have three consecutive level par (or sub par) rounds.

That's raised a question.

Player A is putting in three handicap cards and each one is level par. What would his handicap be?

Would it be scratch or would he get +1?

Re: ParFromAfar.com 12 month scratch challenge has launched...

Tim

I guess the answer is simple. Put three handicap cards in and come on here with an official club handicap. That way we can all follow your progress down to scratch. There is a world of difference as I've said to the OP on the original post between shooting a level par round and getting and maintaining a scratch handicap. Just for clarification is it the former or latter you are actually aiming for.

Judging by your first round at the H4H day you must have left your bags of talent at home. I admire your dogmatic approach to your goal and our steadfast belief that you can shoot a level par round (I'm assuming that is what you actually mean). It is do-able - heck even I've done it in the past. Getting a scratch handicap is a whole different proposition and one I truly don't think you'll achieve. Sorry but just my view
