Guess you just need to find the magic driver that works for you
I think this was always the case to be honest. If you get shaft length, weight & flex right, plus a head with the weight where you want it, it probably doesn't matter if the driver is brand new or five years old. It's just that they only tend to do custom fitting for brand new stuff I guess.

I don't play 7000 yard layouts.

I play closer to 6000 yards than 7000 yards.

For me, then, a driver that lets me hit a ball to a place where I can find it and then have a reasonable second shot to the green is requirement number one.
The other geriatrics in my circle of playing partners are not banging the ball well past me, and very rarely past me at all.

Despite all of this, I let a fitter put me into Fujikura Ventus 6 Reds on my driver and two fairway metals.
They each cost more than some complete sets that I've played in the past.
This is on the strong recommendation of a launch monitor / simulator.
I won't know the result on God's green grass until April.

Then we'll see how much of a fitter's mark I am.
