Hi all,
I found myself without a golf partner this morning and although once I reached the club I was offered, I had rather talked myself into going solo. I have been working overtime on the range for a month or so, what with the weather, new clubs and a lot of swing tweaks, this may a be nice soft option to translate those bits from the range to the course I thought.
Warm up was a mixed bag, I was still waking up and the bad shots made me a little pissy, that is not usually the case. I worked my way through the bag from driver down; I could not seem to hit a 3 wood so I thought I would let it be and moved on, I know a club is a club but I did not want to force the point on a warm up session. There was nothing to rank but nothing really special feeling either. I got to my last 9 balls and by now I am down to my wedges, that felt very solid and under control. A quick putt on the practice green then into a queue of four balls.
I would go on to wait on every shot for the rest of the morning, strange to say but exactly what I wanted, I planned to be confident of my line and club selection, do some swing plane drills and have a little something to eat and drink.
So to the details: Skip this section if you just want to know what “9 of the best†is for a 19 handicap.
1st hole par 5( 501Y) 3 to the green, my 8 iron pitched right by the hole and spun back 12 foot down to the lower tier 2 puts for a par. Found a set of BMW Keys and thought about last week’s Top Gear but Albania seemed a little far to go.
2nd hole par 3(170Y) Missed the green short, a chip and 2 putts, thank got the last one went in, Boggy.
3rd hole par 4(423Y uphill) I never made the green but putted my 4th in from the fringe. I talked the ball in with some sharp “GET IN, GET IN†and a little fist pump for moral.
4th hole par 4 (323Y 90* dog leg, wind in) A short drive followed by a crisp 8 iron over the corner that came up a little short, a smart chip to a conservative part of the stick and one putt for a par, now I am feeling pumped and in control. Addition: *This is in doubt now, the card says 5 but I can’t for the life of me remember making 2 putts there. That is what the score for the story is based on so I will go with that and it is too late now.*
5th hole par 4 (387Y) A hole I seem to score very badly on, on the whole. Strong drive, I clubbed up for my 2nd and hit it hard and clean, I was shocked to see it come up short but happy to miss all the hazards. I played the chip in my mind and had it come up short and roll at the hole but I hit it too hard and it landed at the hole, I told it to “GET DOWN†and it did. One putt par.
6th hole par 4 (406Y SI2) Poor drive, sliced right, only fairway I missed. “3 wood to make up for it!!â€, smashed that along the ground(damn 3 wood) and then thinned my hybrid through the green a chip and 2 putts for a double
7th hole (Would be 343Y but off the temp) stuck the drive to within an easy PW, bottled the downhill birdie putt, par.
8th hole par 3 (219Y) Took the driver, me and the 3 wood are not friends today (I know, a club is a club), a little left of the green, sweet chip to 3 foot, one putt par.
9th hole par 5 (488Y) Strong drive, two ok shots to the fringe, a sweet chip and one putt, par.
I can smell bacon and I need to go and look at my new BMW, I called it a day as I had had some much fun but was board of my own company. Into the bar for some food and to listen to the other guys talk about who’s a bandit and who should be cut, we are a boring lot!
40 Shots, 4 over par, 14 putts and 23 points. Or maybe
*39 Shots, 3 over par, 13 putts and 24 points.
I am seriously happy either way, this is at least equal to my best front nine from the summer. I love it when the sun comes out, both metaphorically and actually.
Everything came up short all day, I knew from the range that was the case and it was confirmed today. New irons with more normal lofts and a kerb on my overswing. The wedge, putter and staying out of trouble made it all work.
Thanks for reading.
