The only shining light in a dismal season
Texans a few season back won their last game which meant they picked second in the draft. Luvvy was pilloried for that win but they dodged a bullet by not having that first pick!Someone asked me on air at the weekend about the difference between allegedly tanking and giving up. And there is a difference.
Tanking is prevalent in the NBA and everyone just accepts it. The NFL is different because of the number of players involved, free agency etc. The nearest anyone is coming to it this year is in Cleveland where the Browns would have a small chance to win with Winston at QB and no chance with DTR or whatever his initials are. So they play the latter to make sure they have the best chance of losing. The wins for the Raiders and Giants in the last fortnight have shown how players on the field give it their all.
Until you get to the Jets. Who have given up the most I have ever seen an NFL team. All the stories coming out of their complex are a total dysfunctional team, players screaming at each other, the coaching staff going through the motions. In their game against the Bills, Aaron Rodgers could have run for a TD but did not want to take the chance of being hit so pulls up, throws a crappy pass and then yells at the receiver for not making the catch. That locker room is just horrible right now and the Jets need to cut Rodgers as soon as possible.
Back in 1986, the Bucs were the worst team I have ever seen getting beat by 30 points a game. I know a lot of the players from that team and to a man they all say the players were trying hard and giving it their all but the coaching staff had just given up knowing they were getting fired.
I don’t think it would be lack of talent.I went back to watch the Bucs' 2014 season finale when players were "being rested" in the second half on GM instructions. I know from the people involved it really happened. It is hilarious watching the lack of originality in the play calling. And the result was Winston over Mariota.
Lovie Smith was coach of that team as well. He was past it as a coach in 2014/15 with the Bucs and then the Texans gave him a year.
Brian Billick did a good book a few years back about the 2018 QB draft and the hits and misses. There are a few factual errors and Billick is the most arrogant nob in NFL history which is why he never got another coaching gig but the basics of the book are pretty good on vetting QBs coming out of college and the 50-50 hit/miss ratio on the first rounders. Which is quite apt as the Bucs have had Vinny Testaverde, Trent Dilfer, Josh Freeman and Jameis Winston. Two of them are friends and I know the reasons behind them not succeeding to the level they should.

You can buy a Brock Bowers tea-tray from the Raiders' on-line shop. It is really good at carrying 10 mugs.
