A few years back I hosted a Zoom call where quite a few forum members joined and we talked NFL and definitely tested my knowledge on rules, strategy, salary cap and other issues. Anyone interested in doing something like that again?
Yeah! I loved that call. Was just before you guys won your second Super Bowl!

Yes it was. I was still living up in Surrey at that point. Got a proper studio in this place. Looks like two already then :) Let's see how many more are up for it and then we can sort out a date.

I've been watching NFL last 6 or 7 years more closely (loosely for years before) and there are still situations I dont really get. Apart from live games I watch a bit of the daily football show on sky and used to watch osi and jason on bbc, lost track of their show when it moved to itv tho.

Timeouts- why are they of any benefit?
Pass interference - seems very inconsistent and has led to some very dubious calls affecting big games. As a corner you can play the ball but not the man - is that right?
Special teams - a mix of offence and defense for when the opponents get the ball back and for field goal attempts - is that it or nay other situations?
Those little grubber kicks they occassionally take from kick off typically on a 4th down- what are they hoping to achieve - repossesion of the ball?
After a TD can u always opt to either take a goal kick for 1 pt or make a one off play for the end zone by throw or run for 2 pts - is that right?
At the end of game they stop early, stand up and shake hands even with like 40s+ on the clock - dont get that when it's a close game. Does pts difference not matter when they are deciding who makes the 9-12 slots for playoffs after the 8 division winners.

I'm sure there's more.

The “little grubber kicks” only happen from a restart where the kicking team tries to regain possession of the ball. On 4th down it is usually a punt to try and get the opponent pinned back down the field as far as possible. The kicking team can’t recover the ball for possession unless it is first touched by the receiving team and dropped.

Yup. You can try for 2 points after a touchdown by scoring another from 2 yards out. Most teams elect for the 1 point kicked conversion. The game situation usually dictates when a 2 point attempt is made (trying to make it a 2 possession game/miles behind and need to catch up etc.)

The standing up and shaking hands comes when the clock will run out before the final play needs to be snapped. This is when an opposing team has no more time outs left to stop the clock from running off. Each play has to be made within a certain amount of time so if there is 38 seconds on the clock and the play clock is 40 seconds the game is effectively over because no snap has to be made.

And yes, Pass interference calls are sometimes very controversial. Plenty of games affected by them! The corners have to play the ball but in doing so they sometimes play the man. Some refereeing teams are more inclined to call DPI than others. Coach killers!

Stopping the clock is the main reason. You do see them called when the offense or defense are lined up wrongly or the playclock is running down but it is normally for stopping the clock near the end of a half.

It is a subjective call and depends what the officials see. They tried one year allowing challenges for PI and in around 98% of the situations, the call stood. The officials have one view. TV has 20 multiple replays. A defensive back cannot impede a receiver's attempt to make a catch or make contact prior to the ball arriving. They can try to make a play on the ball themselves though.

Kickoffs and punts.

I presume you mean an onside kick. This is try to regain possession near the end of a game instead a regular kickoff. The ball must go 10 yards and there are multiple safety rules introduced in recent years to avoid some of the pile-ups that have resulted. Imagine trying to get served at a Weatherspoons and you get the general idea.

After a TD can u always opt to either take a goal kick for 1 pt or make a one off play for the end zone by throw or run for 2 pts - is that right?
Correct. The two point play was introduced to the NFL in 1994 and is run from the two yard line.

At the end of game they stop early, stand up and shake hands even with like 40s+ on the clock - dont get that when it's a close game. Does pts difference not matter when they are deciding who makes the 9-12 slots for playoffs after the 8 division winners.
Points differential is about the 6th tie-breaker after W-L record, head-to-head, division etc. In 100 years of the NFL, no tie-breaker has ever come close to being on points differential. The playclock is 40 seconds. If the game clock shows 35 seconds and the other team is out of timeouts, the clock cannot be stopped and the game is realistically over which is why everyone comes on to the field.

Saturday is for college football. The NFL has a couple of Saturday games at the end of their season when the regular college season has ended. Same as Friday is reserved for high school football.
College is massive in the USA, Why do channel 4 etc not tap into this angle of American football for UK Viewers. 😳👍

It is because everyone in the UK already has their NFL team - every time some marketing research was done into showing these games, the expected audience was going to be really low and not worth the expense. Sky are showing the odd college game on a Saturday night. I've been to a few USF games when I've been in Tampa and although I watch the occasional highlights on YouTube, I have no real interest in it. They are all running Air-raid offenses with four receivers and no QB progression of routes. It gets really boring after a while.
