Good evening all,

I haven't played golf properly for about 10 years, I am now 32 and my legs are getting a bit old for football twice a week so looking at getting back into golf :)

Wondering if anyone could recommend a decent starter set? I don't want to spend a fortune, looking at £250 max. So far I have had a look at the wilson prostaff half set for £160-200 depending where you shop. Or there is someone near me selling a full set of Wilson x-31 clubs plus bag for £80. I have read a few reviews on the x-31 and they dont get glowing reviews but I would also say the person reviewing was a more experienced golfer looking at playing 2-3 times per week.

If anyone could recommend any other clubs in my price range would be much appreciated.

Also if anyone could recommend a beginner friendly golf club around Manchester :) We play pitch and put quite often and are half decent at that so we are confident of getting round a full course without making fools of ourselves :)

Thanks

Hi Danny

Marland GC is a municipal in Rochdale. It should be ok as a stepping stone from the pitch and putt.

Where abouts in Manchester are you

Can pick up some decent sticks for your budget. Any of the big names game improvement clubs from a couple of years back. Probably get something for around 130 150 and then leaves you 100 quid plus maybe for a driver 3 wood and maybe a wedge. Something like the ping g10 g15 range. Always easy to come across

Whearabouts in Mcr are you Danny, Theres a lot to go at Coursewise.
Regarding the clubs, I'd try and get down to range or a shop with a range attached, see what they've got and try them to see what suits. You just want Something reasonably forgiving with a shaft that'll suit your swing.

Thanks so am I beat buying a set of irons, then woods separately?

id say yes, there are so many cheap clubs about on ebay / golf bidder you can afford to do it now days. as others said you can get a decent set of irons for under £150 these days second hand.. leaving you £100 for a driver and id say a 5 wood would be good. dont forget a putter tho!

You can up a good set of 2nd hand irons quite cheap. Mate of mine who has just started picked up a set of RBZ irons for £120. Then he picked up a sldr driver for £70. Some bargains to be had out there.

Other than Withington and Didsbury I haven't Played many of the South Mcr/Stockport Courses. I believe Theres a couple of decent 9 holders close to you At Gatley and Cheadle.
I've heard good things about Bramhall Park although I believe its about 1K Pa. Its a course Ive wanted to play for a while.

Bramhall is a bit snobby as you'd expect, going off the website they don't even have details of membership you have to be proposed by a current member, although some friends who play more than me say this is a thing of the past and they are happy for new members, but I'm looking at just playing pay as you go for 6 months or so to see how I enjoy it ;) then I'll look at a full membership next year if it would make sense financially :)

Welcome Danny, only thing to look out for second hand is the shaft begin regular or stiff, figure out which you are before buying. Also plenty second hand sets have been customised, Ping have the Dot system for example. These lie changes can be suitable or not, and while they can be adjusted it's probably easier to just get something standard for starters. Wood-wise something forgiving like the Ping G range or equivalent and you won't go far wrong. You might find a hybrid (4h, or around 24 degrees) is easier to hit than a long iron.

All that said, if you can invest in a lesson at this early stage I think that would be a very sensible use of money. The basics (set up, grip, alignment etc) are easy to get wrong and once wrong they can be a long road to put right! Happy golfing :)

Thanks, that sounds like really good advice :) I'm going to go into American golf in hazel grove tomorrow and have a play with a few clubs,

I've already got a weird habit that I hold clubs in left handed way ie left hand at the bottom :/ but that's how I've always played and tried many times to switch but I can't do it. I've also tried playing with left handed clubs with no luck :(

I'll probably end up going for a new set of clubs over second hand as then I can have a play with before buying at the shop :)

Danny

Welcome Danny

I am a member at Hazel Grove I would be happy to host you there, can I also suggest you book a lesson with our Pro James who is a really good teacher.
It might be an idea to talk to him about clubs as well as he has second hand sets he can adjust for you and still keep within your budget.

Danny, you play the wrong sport you should be playing hurling ;)

I play with a guy who holds his clubs like you do and the big lad smashes it 250 yards down the middle and has great control around the greens! Each to their own :D

That would be great, be nice to meet a few other locals. How often do you play?
Hazel grove would probably be the one I looked at joining locally, I'll check out their website this afternoon and look at contacting the pro there :)

Thanks

Now the weather is better I will play more in the week so happy to take you round late afternoon if it suits or one Sunday. Saturday is comp day. Message me when you are free. If you don't mined playing with an old man.
