New Wedges

My current wedges are lovely but 9 years old. I've convinced myself I need some new wedges to get more zip off the club face when pitching.

I'm currently gaming (sorry) Mizuno T5's:
- 54/12: my go-to from 70-100 yards, and also chipping around the green. I use this a lot from the rough so make use of the bounce.
- 58/08: mainly use this around the green, very rare to hit this with a full swing, usually no more than a three quarter swing which flies 60 yards. I prefer the lower bounce for tight lies in the summer (e.g when I need to nip it cleanly to chip it over a bunker). I used to have a 60 degree lob wedge but I find the 58 is enough loft and is more versatile.

So, since I last bought wedges, things have got more complicated with the introduction of grinds. Would be grateful for any guidance on pros / cons / what to look for.

Prices have also shot up... Vokeys and Mizuno T24's are £159 each, although I'm hoping to make use of Black Friday / Black November to make a saving.

I got rid of my volkeys for the t24s. Mizuno wedges felt softer and nicer to hit.
I have 48/52/58 the 48/52 have 12 bounce and 58 has 2 bounce. I love a flop shot around the greens so I needed a wedge with little to no bounce especially when I’m playing links golf.

A bit out of left field - but have a look on the Hippo Golf website.

They have some Japanese forged wedges under the Radar monicker.

Things of absolutely simplistic beauty to my eyes. And I am more than happy with their performance.

Downside is there are not any custom grinds etc. But as you can get a set of 3 for the price of one Vokey or the like that
might be something you can overlook?

No lofts stamped on the sole either, just a very small loft \ bounce etching on the hosel. Haven't pulled the wrong one ...... Yet!!

Are they still in business? Everything on the website is out of stock 🤔

Thanks. What grind option did you go for with the 58? What’s it like from bunkers with no bounce?

when i switched from my Older Mizuno MPT5 to a newer T22 i think, i was very disappointed, didn't feel anything as good or have as much spin and the shaft options was different. much heavier and stiffer. ive not been playing the last 4 months but was about to give cleveland a go they appear to have plenty of options for bounce and grind etc and shafts. i didn't get round to it but will def next spring

I use Mizuno S23s, which I really like. There are a few new ones out there for around £99 (these were £159 until recently) if you look around. Presumably the next model will be hitting the shelves shortly.

Thanks. However I want to get matching wedges (don’t need to match irons) but with shafts that match my irons.

I've found it one of the difficult things when buying wedges, anything stock usually comes with very heavy shafts. I don't like to go over 115 grams so it limits the options unless you custom order and that often is costly. Harder to find a bargain

I really like my new wedges, mizuno s23 54 and 60 degree

Now I've gone the opposite from @sunshine , the shafts are standard in them which are different from my irons but also they have plus 4 grips where as my clubs don't

Works really well tbh, try not to use the wedges for more than half shots. Stick to a gap wedge (jpx) for longer shots

£99 each on clubhouse golf

I’m still using Mizuno S18 wedges (51 & 56) and they are as good as ever. Modus 105 shafts matching my irons was important when fitted.

Still loads of life left in them, not changing them anytime soon.

May I ask why is the shaft important to match your irons? The 51 I can undertake but the 56 is mainly shorter shots with lots of different contacts compared to say a 7 iron full swing of

Maybe in your game but I will play full 90 yard shots with the 56 and full 100 yard shots with the 51.

They will also be used around the green and bunkers for those shorter shots, flops and chips.

I prefer the shaft to be around the 105g mark and no heavier.
