my Pro said "nearly everyone I see plays with a putter that's too long"

A couple of months ago I suggested to a forumer (unfortunately can't remember who) that he spent a fiver or so in getting his putter shaft cut down and re-gripped and give it a try before taking out a re-mortgage on buying a new one. It worked for me but never heard how it worked for him.

Being a bit of a cheapskate, I've had the same putter for about 10 - 12 years. Average about 32/34 putts a round so that's not the main reason my handicap is still cr*p.

Well Leftie - I just got 2 1/2 inches lopped off mine, but not yet used it in anger. I'll let you know what happens

Hi leftie, I think that was me!

I had my original Ben Sayers mallet putter (it came with the package) trimmed to 33 inches. It was a lot more comfortable to use, no snagging on my clothes and I found the sightlines easier to pick up.

Consequently when I got my new putter (Ping B60) I had it fitted (£65 in my pro shop - only £5 dearer than AG). This for a putter is a fairly simple process involving, in my case, my pro watching a few putts to check my plane. This determines the need for the putter to be face or heel balanced; for my straight back and through it meant face balanced. I also had it cut down to 33 in. and the original Karsten grip replaced, this though is down to personal preference.

I feel much more confident (managed to average 2-putts over 27 holes the other week) and am more likely to get closer the hole on a lagged putt.

I tried out a few other putters, including Rossas, Odysseys and Fishers, but for me the Ping felt better (and as a bonus was more than £30 cheaper!).

Said before i always thought we get ripped of with these expensive putters(just think the mark up must be massive)but when i tried a few i was amazed how well they are balanced.

As has been mentioned before, some people are happy to throw £100, £150 or even £250 on a driver but when it comes to the putter, the most used club of all, they want to penny pinch, why?

Said this before, I think the mark up on putters compared to drivers will be huge. Drivers have various parts that have to be made, glued and/or welded in place then the club is put together where as a putter is usually turned from one piece of metal then put together.

This makes me think it cost less to manufacture but are still in the price bracket of top end drivers.

So i might be right or wrong on the mark up but that is my feeling.

I also have to say the bettinardi i tried was fantastic and i would pay the price for it as i thought it was far and above the best putter i ever picked up.

As for you spend £100-£250 on a driver you use less than a putter, you use a club more so spend more for no other reason than you use a club more.
Why dont you go out and try and pay £200 on a wedge, bet you use that more than your driver.
I would put money on that it costs more to manufacture a top end driver than a top end putter, hence the driver will be more expensive before the mark up.

Is 2 1/2 inches the same as an inch?
