Morning all,
The first pre print-run edition of the April issue has just hit the office, so subscribers will be getting theirs very soon. In it, you'll find a new 'handicap' page we're running in association with HowDidiDo.

The first one is a general introduction, but going forwards we're looking to home in on one particular area each month to help try and explain/clarify things. In addition, HowDidiDo's MD, Richard Peabody, will be answering one specific handicap-related question each month.

So if any of you have any suggestions for topics to cover, or any queries or questions for Richard, please let me know either in this post or via email to jezz_ellwood@ipcmedia.com

This page is much more about clarifying and explaining the system such as it is rather than looking to rewrite/revamp it so any questions/queries/concerns need to bear that in mind.

Can we ask "what makes a competition a qualifier or non-qualifier?" please?

Not sure if it's length, mats, temporary greens or something else.

Cheers,
Bratty

That's covered by CONGU and not realy anything to do with HDID

Thats simple.

Qualifier - One you hack in
Non Qualifier - One you beleive could be a qualifier only for you to shoot a great score to find that it was pointless.

Ring any bells :D :D :D :D :D :D

Arghhhhh!

Just typed a long post and damn server cannot be found again!!! Pish!

Okay. Here goes again.

1) What is the average sf and stroke play score across the country?

2) What is the average h'cap?

3) How often should we get 36 points or more or play to our h'cap in a medal? (ref Q1)

4) Does the current h'cap system favour a particular h'cap and what is it? (Statistics that you already collect would show this).

5) How many individuals take part in comps that you log over a 12 month period?

6) Is there a noticable drop off in competitors for a medal compared to a sf comp?

7) Do you think the current h'cap system is fair, and do you have your own ideas based around the stats you collect to make it fairer?

8) Is the current system of allowing women to have a h'cap of up to 36 and playing off the reds fair when men can only have a h'cap of up to 28, and playing off the whites?

9) Considering the the number of 'entries' you make week in week out. Do you think that all scores are genuine, especially as there are golfers that seem not to know the rules regarding drops and penalties?

10) Assuming that your figures are available to be analysised, is it possible to spot someone who is protecting their h'cap with the information you have. And if so do you inform the relevent club?

11) If my h'cap was obtained on a short 'easy' course, is it not possible to have a h'cap adjustment for when playing longer or more difficult courses? Again you must have stats with which to validate this kind of thing.

Jezz. I hope at least one of the above is along the right lines for your piece.

I ****** hate you sometimes, mate! ;)

And you forgot to add "and then to add insult to injury, you then come second!". :(

Competition Standard Scratch - why?

I understand how it works. I just don't understand why it is needed. The playing field is level. We all play against the same course under the same conditions. Why, then, is the score our handicaps are judged against moved depending on how well or not people score? If I shoot a nett 68 on our course (SSS 69) in a competition I should get cut 0.2 shots (handicap 8/Cat2) but if enough others have played well the CSS reduces to 68 and I don't get my cut. Why don't we just all get cut?

If the weather is poor and everyone scores poorly against Standard Scratch Score then everyone should go up .1
By the same token if the weather is good and everyone scores well then everyone should get cut.

Lol Parmo, there is a choice, we (our club) don't participate in HDID at all, our golfing union has its own site which covers the whole island of Ireland, North and South. HDID is used by some clubs but the gui golfnet site is pretty good on its own, I can look right back to when I first joined my club in 06 and see every score, qualifying or not, stroke/stableford, css, which days I got cut and by how much etc.

As far as I am aware, we have no plans to subscribe to an 3rd party company.

Mod of the year by miles. :D

lol, no need to remove it, I understand why you asked though, paying for an online presence for members should be included in the membership of any local county/national union.

Why do we not apply the same system as America where your handicap is adjusted based on the difficulty of the course? Depending on the course I can be a hacker or a bandit off my handicap so surely the challenge of the course should be an important factor as to the handicap you apply for the round.

Good idea. I've been closely involved with handicapping for several years and there is so much (of an admittedly fairly complicated system) that the rank and file don't understand. Have had to deal with so many instances of "the computer has my handicap wrong" it's untrue and as yet I've never seen the computer be wrong.

Some suggestions:
Stableford adjustment
How adjustement works when moving down a category with a single good score.
What sort of disqualified scores count, which don't, and why.
How you can get cut with an NR.
Perhaps even a few simple things like the obvious need for CSS :D
