I am looking to invest in a new driver and was wondering if anyone could recommend what driver to get and whether to go for a regular or stiff shaft? As I have been told many different things!!

The shaft depends on several things.
1. Swing speed
2. Swing speed
3. Swing speed
4. Whether it feels good to you.
5. If you hit it straight.

My advice is to find somewhere where you can try different shafts on a proper range, not an indoor net.
Have you had your swing speed measured before?

Ah,one of those questions that cannot really be answered without a lot more info such as swing speed, handicap, shot shape at the moment and what you are looking for in a club.Go see your nearest PGA pro and ask him, if he is worth his salt he will watch you hit a few balls and then recommend a suitable club.He should also be able to price match within reason.Make use of a pro it's what they are there for.Happy swinging :D

Or, if you have your swing on film, you could post it on Youtube and put a link in here and we can help.

I think draw boy and bobmac have got it completely right. The flex of the shaft rides on many things that pro would have to annalise your swing and give feedback and data that would help your game most.

Also its about feel and what you are most comftable with.

Bob - you forgot the most important thing

Swing Speed!!

When i was fitted for my irons i was recommended the uniflex shaft as it is in between a regular and a stiff shaft and this seems to work really well for me. Also being left handed my options seem to be limited in what drivers come in the loft i want, and also with the options of a different shaft as alot only offer the regular shaft on left handed drivers, which is a pain in the ass!!!!

just out of interest, how far do you hit the driver when you hit it well on a flat day?

trouble is there are regular shafts and regular shafts some manufacturers use firmer shaft flex than others so try to give a few shafts a go in which ever driver you choose and pick the best for you don't just buy a regular and hope for the best :D

I agree, there are differences in regular between different manufacturers, but at least we know your clubhead speed isn't fast enough for a stiff shaft.
Do you have any preference for a cetain name? Ping, Titleist etc?
Most big club manufaturers all make decent shafts, it just needs you to try before you buy.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I'm not after a certain name but i do love my Ping G10 3 wood and hybrid so maybe i'll give the driver a go??!!

If you hit the 3 wood and rescue well, the chances are you'll get on well with the G10 driver too.
What shaft is in the 3 wood, the Ping TFC129 ?

My best advice is go see your local PGA pro and ask him the question. Most good pros will spend the time explaining how suitable shafts are measured and the pros and cons of stiff v regular and should watch you hit a few balls.

If it helps I have a TM R7 Limited with regular Matrix Ozik shaft and it is the best driver I've ever hit. I have a very quick swing but I've been told at numerous demo days (Cally, Ping, Wilson, TM and Yonex) that my figures are better suited to regular and to be fair I've always felt more comfortable with regular than stiff and find I get more forgiveness and a better flight. Go out and try a few different shafts and see what you think is best for you

Oddly my swing is slower than Homers, but I have a stiff Ozik Matrix Each to their own really. In general you would be better off with regular, especially if you tend to fade it

As some others have said, since you already have some Ping clubs there's a good chance you'll get on with a Ping Driver.
I was told that Ping don't charge for a fitting, so if you're close enough to a fitting centre it's very worthwhile going to one. You get to try different shaft and head combinations, and have the results of each hit monitored to see which produces the best results.
