New club Renfrewshire area.

Hi Guys,
Brand new to the forum after recently taking back up playing golf.

Im on the hunt for a new club to join. I was previously a junior member at Old Course Ranfurly for 4 years, really enjoyed the course but now want a change.

I have played the majority of the courses in the local area in the past couple months and have narrowed my choices down to, Ranfurly Castle, Kilmacolm & Gleddoch House.

I played at Gleddoch last night and would comment it is a great course, lovely layout and views but felt the front nine is in urgent need of attention particularly the greens. I have also heard that it is susceptible to waterlogging.

Has anyone any comments/ suggestions.

Gleddoch - waterlogged dump run by a hotel chain so medal golf will be limited.

Ranfurly Castle - good lay out but not the friendliest course, infact its a terrible members club, all the "young" ones have left it. Also been levy's (sp) the last two years and probably again next year. I hated the place with a passion but the course is very good.

Kilmacolm - probably the best course condition wise in Renfrewshire.

Old Ranfurly, you will do an awful lot worse than re-join The Old Course Ranfurly. Friendly brilliantly run club. I love the place, mainly because its a "true" members club and course.
 
I had two excellent rounds up there at the weekend, tonights round will be a test to see how it has held up against the rain of last night. There is obvious signs that they are trying to rectify the issue as there is newly formed trenches and watercourses.
Il let you know how tonight goes.... PS. Waders are in the boot!

That's good to hear as its a very nice layout with great views.

Ive played Gleddoch house, whilst away on business on about 3 occasions.

The course design is very good with lots of challenging holes, especially the ones up the hill.

However, every time the greens have been poor. This has been spread over about 3 years, so I presume it is a long term thing. Is Bonnyton (near Eaglesham) too far away? Lovely course, but it may be expensive.
 
Agree about Bonnyton. Its a very good course always immaculate and excellent views over the whole of Glasgow and beyond.

I think I played there a few years back....is it the ,or was it a club with a large Jewish membership on Eaglesham Moor? If so,it is a course I really enjoyed.

It is Sholam ago I can't remember....:D

Yes it is, which is why I can play it for free, as our course is also a semi-Jewish course, if you know what I mean. You can make your own jokes up there.

Lovely views over Glasgow from the 2nd tee and others. A good mix of holes, but some really tricky uphill par 3's. Quite undulating, but not too bad a walk. The 18th green is in a dip, which is only seen with a very good drive.
 
The front 9 & 10th Greens are not in the best of condition and do need work done to them, but from the 11th - 18th are good.

Bonnyton is a lovely course and I play it most Wednesday evenings, Its 40 mins drive from where I live and would not benefit from being a member there.

I have chosen Gleddoch as I enjoyed playing it at the weekend, im not fixed or tied to any membership so I can see how the rest of the year pans out.

I have friends/ family who play at Old Ranfurly, Ranfurly Castle & Kilmacolm so wont be stuck for a game even if Gleddoch is poor later on in the year.
 
Bonnyton is a much better lay out and test of golf than Ranfurly Castle. To have Bonnyton behind Gleddoch, Gourock and Paisley is just laughable in my opinion. Bonnyton is stronger than the three of them combined. Kilmacolm is always in much better condition than East Renfrewshire although I will concede that East Renfrewshire is a tougher track.


1) Kilmacolm
2) Bonnyton
3) East Renfrewshire
4) Ranfurly Castle
5) Whitecraigs (why is this omitted?)
6) Erskine (not good at present I hear)
7, 8, 9, 10, 11. Take your pick in preference from Old Ran Gourock, Cathcart Castle, Eastwood and Paisley.
12) Gleddoch. Great lay out, needs investment and TLC.
13) Renfrew. Floods non stop from the Clyde, noisy from Glasgow Airport. Not my cuppa at all.


Can't offer an opinion on the Earl of Marr however it looks superb from the Erskine Bridge.
 
Planning to have a look at Gleddoch myself this weekend, did you strike a deal for the rest of the year or will just
pay the green fees as you go.
