Not your normal thread on here but just got a quote from British Gas for a new boiler nearly collapsed at the price the quoted, it was just a new boiler not a full system then if you pay it up over 5 years it would cost nearly 50% more thats the way the salesman make there money.

Totally shocked ,checked out the prices online and its nearly 60% cheaper doing it that way then getting someone to fit it.

The wife saw the advert on Tv and phoned up in January ,today was the first time they could come , not desperate for a new one but thought we'd get a price.

Defo need to get more quotes ,think i might frame that one for its novelty value.

My only advice would be not to buy a cheap boiler, stick with valiant or Worcester both offer 5yr parts and labour warranty and you won't go wrong.

I'd say on average a local installer wound charge around 2/3's of BG's price.

The guy gave us a price for a Worcester and checking it online the price difference is shocking, they wanted nearly £400 for electrical work ,which for the life of me i can't see what for.

obviously I can't see what electrical work needs altering but £400 sounds way ott.

If it just needs a new supply to boiler and wiring for a stat/timer i'd say max £200 for a local spark to do.

I'd do that part myself Stuart but it doesn't need done i no that for a fact, just a rip off.

Im sure theres a BIG plumber who will come along and SLICE the price down.

;)

Boiler swap over can normally be straight forward enough but your system may need a deep clean and descale before sticking a new boiler in

Getting a new boiler in on Friday. Got a quote from BG, one from Southern Electric and a couple with independents, all Worcester-Bosch or Vaillant. Went with a local independent because of combination of better price, willingness to answer questions and I thought the guy seemed trustworthy.

when you are defo going to change boiler, I can give you as much info as you need and cheapest way of doing it.

Cheers Dave, not sure of timescale but got a few others to come in and give a price, one of the guys i golf with said he'd do so looking much better than British Gas.

Stay well away from British Gas!

I had a Bosch-Worcester boiler fitted for £2,000.

The old girl next to my MiL had exactly the same boiler fitted and BG charged her £4,000!

Rip-off merchants.

My brother is a gas engineer and would usually charge about 3k for a new central heating system, this is depentant on how many radiators, type of boiler ,British Gas would be approx 7k for same work,
Straight boiler swap would be price of boiler, plus a days pay for 2 people which would usually be around £250 each.

Just about the right price right for a like for like boiler change, with no complications , but when changing from an old conventional system to combi, can cause probs.
But no way get British gas, your local G/Safe plumber, will be at least 50% lower
PS-- you can buy a worcester boiler on line for the same price as the plumber .

Cheers for the help guys ,got some local guys who i know coming in to have look. Its a doodle of a job not much pipe to be run plenty clearance under the floor for doing it more than 6ft deep founds. Just a rip of the big salesman was a bit embarrassed but that was the price and he couldn't move on it.

I've just had a new system installed by a local independant heating company. 3 bed house, new Vaillant combi boiler, new rads, remove old header tank and hot water tank, flush all the crud out the pipes, install new thermostat/timer.

£2700 job's a good'un

That's a very good price for a full system.
