My Swing Speed Journey

Great to have an expert on here!

Sorry if I missed it, but how long have you been playing /what is your handicap? I’d expect starting from your base you’d be easily getting to at least 115mph.

Expert might be pushing it!

Depends how you define playing, I did the usual messing around at the range and Topgolf at various points, but I only started playing properly about 3 years ago. Currently off 11, but the goal this year is to break the single figure milestone. although my golf is secondary as my main focus is encouraging my daughter to play, being her caddy etc.

I guessed that when you gave a clean and jerk number, you don't see many recreational lifters doing that.

To be honest I wouldn't recommend them to most lifters either, unless they are really into weightlifting as a secondary hobby. The technical complexities of the lift mean that for most people the ROI isn't there, much easier to do pulls, jump squats, trap bar jumps, jumping and bounding to get the same amount of carryover.

I'm on week 2 of level 2 and it's going well. Played a few holes yesterday and was carrying it approx 230, which is a real improvement for me. Driver speed at the range is in the 90s with a top of 96 so far.
My goal is 100 plus with the driver which in turn my average will have increased overall.
If I can get to around
200 , 220 , and 240 carry for crap , average and good respectively then I'd be pretty happy with that.

I actually had a sneaky session this evening. I wasn't really planning it, but my daughter wanted to. Ended up with a fastest driver of 115, which considering I'm working on a technical change leaves me feeling pretty happy, as hopefully that will translate to be nearer 110 hitting a ball. Especially happy with that jump as I haven't really done any speed training with the new move yet.

The real star was my daughter though, she's now up to 70 which is especially good considering we took a break from speed training over the winter, and we'd been throwing medicine balls around earlier.

Just wanted a pop a reply here. I went on a swing speed journey similarly. Base swing speed was 100. Ended up getting speed on the course to 113. Pushing it on the range I could hit about 116/117. Last year however pushed it too far and ended up being sidelined for almost 7 months! I guess it’s know your limits, there is only so much more you can gain.

Yes I am concerned about overdoing it, but I do make sure I am properly warmed up and if I feel any twinges I'll stop.

I don't think speed training is particularly any more risky than other athletic endeavours, but I do think a lot of golfers overlook the importance of base conditioning and warming up. Being stronger and more flexible may not have any impact on your golf scores, but it will make you more resilient to injury. Warming up is particularly interesting a lot of golfers are proud they don't bother, or even when they do it's a couple of pointless crappy static stretches and that's it. I think part of this is because the risk is less obvious in golf, no one would walk into a gym cold and then immediately load 200kg on the bar and try to squat it, because they'd be scared of the consequences, yet a golf swing which can be more brutal on the shoulders, back and hips is not viewed that way.

I plan to start the speed training again tomorrow after a 3 week break. Just going to pickup on level 2 and hopefully I’ve not lost any speed.

Just did fist session after 3 weeks off. I played 18 this morning then went for a sauna so felt tired and had to really talk myself into getting off the sofa to do the training.
Driver cold was 100mph on all 3 so didn’t lose any speed. Green best was 123mph my pb with green is 124mph. Then blue I hit 120mph so beat my best by 1mph then best red was 115mph and that was my previous pb with red. Ended with 3 drives 110/110/108 so very happy not sure if the sauna helped or not I felt really tired but it might of helped loosen me up.

Hopefully that means when fresh you have even more speed in the tank, even if you weren't as tired as you think you wouldn't really expect to be at peak speed performance after having played a round. Good recovery protocols always help though, so the sauna may have played it's part, although usually an ice bath is the less enjoyable golden standard for recovery.

Can someone confirm what the actual total weights of their speed sticks are? Just curious 🙃
Mine are apparently
Green “Light” Club45″255 Grams
Blue “Medium” Club45″290 Grams
Red “Heavy” Club45″335 Grams

Mines 265g, 300g, 335g and 385g
I bought it a couple a month ago after reading through this thread but haven't really followed a proper program with them yet. More focused on improving technique at the minute as swings with them don't really seem faster than driver speed.

Interesting, all are lighter than my driver which is 340, though the red one is close.

385 is very heavy for the driver. I wonder what they rational is. What is the brand of your system?

Mines superspeed golf

It was just off amazon. Was called hhgolf I think
I was looking at Amazon ones earlier, had me wondering what the weight of a driver was. I can't believe it's more than 340g, I thought it'd be lighter than that

I'm going to crack out the weighing scales later and see how mine measure up. They're the superspeed set (adult & junior) but always interesting to see how much tolerance there is on their actual weight against their claimed weight.

I did a session yesterday but only ended up hitting 112 with my driver, I think it's just fatigue as I played both days on the weekend carrying 2 bags because it was carry only and I worked out both days too, that's my excuse anyway!

Not only is important the total weight but also how it is distributed along the shaft. I think in golf is called swing weight. For example, imagine two clubs with the same weight but one of them have almost all the weight in the club head and the other has all the weight next to the grip, in this case you the first one will feel much more heavy.

My driver is 340 with the 70g shaft and a midsize grip so this is probably as heavy as it can get. In comparison, a driver with a standard head but a very light shaft/grip is 300g.

Swing weight is important but I’d say it matters less for overspeed training.
