My first medal (boring thread alert)

So, I am out of the medal because of a previous NR. I have put my blind drive into the woods. It looks safe from the tee so I don't play a provisional and when I get there I can't find it. You want me to take a rounded 7 in those circumstances rather than walk back to the tee, delaying the group behind and playing 3 off the tee and maybe making the 5 or 6 that keeps me in buffer.

These two sentences shouldn't go together!

bunkers are a nightmare for peeps when its medal time. there is no place to hide if you don't have the technique to get out.

my poor brother took a 10 at the 1st one captains day after being in the greenside bunker in two shots.

no shame in Nr ing at a hole. ive nrd at the first before and continued my round. why should it stop you continuing your round. im trying my best not to nr as im getting better. but no shame in doing it

unless it involves going back to the tee I very rarely NR in a medal. just rack whatever number it may be and move on. learn from it, let it be a lesson to you. you will remember what caused you to post a 10 much more than just a simple blob!

This is a good point Gary.

I rarely find the sand at our gaff, but during the medal at the weekend I found 3 greenside bunkers. With all the rain we'd had the sand was compacted down and, if I'm being honest, not very well raked.

Got out, each time was within 8 feet. Holed one, lipped another and didn't hit the last putt so came up short.

that's a very good return for 3 bunkers. down in 3 every time happy. if I give myself a chance of making the 1st putt im also happy.

out in 1 is essential! :)

Not a fan of stableford comps and scores in 'the buffer' when in reality the score could have been 20 over your h/cap. Apologies OP as this isn't a pop at you, it's just the system.

A problem of using all strokes for handicap rather than converting to stableford, is that it can be more easily manipulated by the saddo's that maintain falsely high handicaps.

I could be walking down the 18th having got on the green in 2 and am 3 under handicap only for a mate waiting by the green to tell me that -4 wouldn't get into the prizes, so I 8-putt to avoid getting cut.

I'm confused(easy I know) but I recently had a round in a medal where I shot net 72 which included two 8s and a 7, CSS that day was 70.going by what you say should those holes been reduced? Which would have reduced my score therefore getting a cut??

No, your seven would remain a 7 assuming on a par 4 and the 8's would become a 7 assuming on a par 4 so score would be net 70 right on CSS after your 2 shot adjustment

but won't that be rounded down to a nett double bogie so you are still 1 under and still getting a cut.

The only reason you should NR a hole is if you can't find your ball and there are folk on the tee AND you have no score going.

At the most,i never n/r, even if I have bad holes, don't really get people who do, show some fighting spirit, you never know wot might happen,

well done to the OP on getting the first medal done and recording buffer despite 2 bad holes shows plenty of signs for good things and cuts to come.

The rounding and converting medal scores to stableford scores along with CSS is something that will never please everybody but its the system so we have to accept it and get on with it. ;)

In the current system yes. I was trying to show a downside of your idea of not rounding down for handicap. Maybe I misunderstood your post, in which case, sorry. :)
