I'm playing my first proper club matchplay game tomorrow - the last time I played matchplay in a club game was back in the late eighties!!!

I'm a bit nervous as I've always felt that I'm not very good at matchplay - a rediculous thought process as, technically, matchplay is the same as medal and stableford - try to play as well as you can. But, nervous I am.

I'm going to enjoy the game (beats working) and the weather should be good (makes a nice change) and I'm using my good finish at Luton Hoo as my inspiration.

I'll probably lose 10&8......

There I go again......

good luck, were not pros playing for skins so just play your normal game. have your usual targets. then post tomorrow nightn boasting your easy win :D

Cheers pal.

I'm actually looking forward to it (with slight apprehension). The irony is that I think it's an excellent format - the gimmies, the mind games, etc - I think it's great. I guess the only way to overcome my fears is to face them and play loads of matchplay games (just got to get that past the Wife......)

this is my second season back after 15 years out. too late last year to play in club championship matches and pairs. this year is my first so im pretty nervous and excited aswell.

You don't look old enough to even have been alive then!

Good luck mate... chin up. Even if it looks like there's no hope it's not over until it's over in matchplay. Closing out a game can be as tough as chasing a lost cause sometimes. I reckon you'll win 4&3 - keep us posted! :)

After twenty years, at 8:09 this morning I struck my first matchplay drive.......

The drive ended up in the middle of the fairway, my approach shot finished fifteen feet from the flag - a nice solid four putt - yes, four putt to start with a six. 1 down....... :D

A moody drive down the second puts me in the trees - I can see the green but I'm going to have to be Tigeresque with my approach. Too much bottom hand and the ball hooks into the trees. Thankfully, still got a shot into the green - a lovely seven iron bump and run that pitchs on the fringe and runs right through the green - this isn't going to be my day!!! :D

2 down after 2....... :(

I won the next four holes.......

At the turn I was two up. The highlight for me was the 9th. It's a dogleg (left to right) par 5. I was in the greenside bunker for two. Bunker play isn't one of my strong points so I decided to fully concentrate and hit the sand an inch behind the ball. I had one thought process and one thought process only - 'commit to the shot'!!! I splashed out to four feet. I then holed the putt. My oppo could only muster a five.

I then turned the screw on the back nine. I found myself in sand again on the 10th - same concentration, same thought process - same result!!! Holed the putt - a nice 4. My oppo was off 15 - he said to me that he'd played the last two holes 1 over par and lost both holes.......

On the back nine the highlight was the 12th. I hit my best drive of the day leaving a six iron. I managed to slice this to the right of the green. My oppo has stiffed his third shot to six feet so I was in trouble. I had a tricky chip shot - a bunker to the left that would catch any mis-hit chips and a large bank just before the fringe so my only option was a lob shot. It ends up six feet away. My oppo hits his putt a foot past. I hole my putt for a 4. He misses his putt. Somehow, I've scrambled a win on a hole where he got a shot!!! I don't think I've ever felt so good on a course!!!

As JustOne says, trying to wrap up the win can be tricky - I let me thoughts run away with me on the 14th. I hit another good drive and rather than concentrate on the job in hand, I got a bit carried away and my oppo won the hole.

I didn't have to wait long, I sealed the 4&3 win on the 15th!!!

It was a good game (for me) and I can't wait for my next matchplay game.

Good win AW.

I'm in the same situation, got to play my first matchplay game for about 25 years sometime before the end of May.

Nice win, particularly given your start!! That's what I love about matchplay - if you have a bit of a mare on a hole early then it's only 1 gone and plenty of time to get it back!

It is a strange format because after the 12th I felt that my oppo had given up. He proceeded to dump his tee shot at 13 into the greenside bunker. It was a very half hearted shot. I wanted to offer him some words of encouragement as I hate to see fellow golfers struggle but I had to remind myself that we were in competition.

It was played in a great spirit though which made it all the more enjoyable.

What a superb game this golf is!!!
