I ask this because I've earnt a bit of cash, and my parents are giving me a golf discount voucher for some new clubs when i complete my GCSE's, but I want to change everything in my bag apart from my 3 wedges, so what should I go for first? Or is it all personal preference.

Simple one for me, putter by a long shot, use it for somewhere between a third and a half of all shots in each round

For me Driver and Putter, Im great with the driver and crap with the putter... If there were a "right" answer to this question though it would be putter.

Dirver gets the hole off to a good positive start, putter puts the ball in the hole.

I agree the one you use the most is most important your putter. From your previous posts and desire to rapidly improve I would be thinking more on the lessons front and playing some competitive junior golf before splashing out too much on clubs.

If you need a putter try and get fitted for one. Putter for me, I did not get fitted for mine but I did the research, took the time and eventually found the right one for me based on my own judgement.

I would recommend getting fitted though...

Save us searching and tell us what you have first and your ability, strong points, weaknesses as lessons could well be the best purchase.
Erm, not an official handicap yet, shot an average round yesterday for my first card towards one of +15. My strong points are wedge play and iron play. Irons are probably strongest part of my game ( Nike slingshots 2011) problem is they only go down to a 5 iron, i prefer sets that go down to a 3 iron. Driving/ putting probably weakest part of game, inconsistent and not confident with driving, got a callaway big bertha 7 wood, 5 wood 3 wood, and a wilson deep red drive. Had the same putter for over 5 years now, Ping Zing Karsten, used to be good with it, pretty solid from inside 6 foot, struggle greatly with speed and lag putts though, already started having lessons. Cheers.

Shame the two of them are the weakest part of my game at the moment

Cheers, do the major retailers like Nevada bobs, AG do putter fittings? only problem is im worried that using the 10 foot green on the shop floor will not give me a true insight into what is best for me, I could go to my local pro but he only stocks mizuno putters and the odd ping one.

Its not a shame buddy, you know exactly what to spend your practice time on!
True that, the main thing for putting is confidence, and I have no idea about the driver, how I can hit a 3 wood and 5 wood really well and quite far, then when the driver comes out it goes wrong, although i did have a lesson the other day and it went well, took it out on the course and it was same old same old

try scarificing some distance off the tee by playing a 3 wood for improved accuracy whilst you work on the driver?
15 over not too shabby for your first card gives you something to aim for with the next 2.

Why do you want to change everything in your bag?

What's in your bag for a start?

No, no, no, no, no.

Bad boy. Dirty boy. Nevada Bob's ?? Pah !!

Nowt wrong with Ping putters if you like them - take them all out on the practise green and give them a go. Take two or three weeks if necessary. If you don't like them, then try other brands in Bob's etc. (or go to other courses, where you can try their putters outside as well). Even if it's not one of his normal brands, your pro should still be able to get it for you - hopefully on a sale or return. Then he should be willing to fit it to you as well.

For me my most important club is my 52 degree wedge. It will no doubt get less important as I start hitting more GIR, but the reason I think it's more important than a putter is because it gives me a greater incremental advantage.

The different between a badly-suited putter and a well-suited putter is - I think - masked by the inadequacy of the golfer holding it in the first place. That is, there's a huge amount one can do to improve your putting by practicing - custom fitting won't make you an amazing putter.

A good wedge for around the greens can really make a big difference though and can make 'getting on the green' develop into 'getting close to the pin', turning 2 putts from non-GIR situations into 1 putts. I reckon you could easily drop 5 strokes a round from good around-the-green play.

My best bit of advice if you have the money is to go somewhere and get a fitting for a putter. A bloke at my club who had a custom fitting session for a Scotty Cameron instantly knocked a few shots a round off and his handicap did come down. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. But he is solid from inside 6 foot now and that is what makes the difference to a round.
