I won the nett a couple of years ago. Came top 10 in the gross same year.

Winner, once, and a few runner up finishes. Getting harder to compete with the younger + hcp's who play much more - done with county events for the same reason. Will still play the CC though as it's a good challenge, get to play with different folks and you never know on the day

I have qualified the 3 years I have entered, but its always tough when it gets to the knockout. Top 15 qualify plus last years winner.
Last 8 once and Last 16 twice.

Are those that are saying they came 3rd, 4th, 10th etc with a nett score they can effectively be the Clubs Champion if they won? Surely if anything the club champ has to be the lowest gross and as some clubs do, run a separate comp to the side for best nett so its more inclusive on the day, but a club champ can't be a nett score?

Yep we've got 2 comps, 4 trophies over the 2 days. Lowest nett single round. Lowest gross single round. Nett club champ and club champ.
Obviously the club champ has the greater kudos....but the nett is still a bona fide honours board comp. it is possible for the same fella to win all 4.
The nett comp has been going since 1915 so it's got more history than Chelsea
Our club champion is the scratch winner and you only get your name on the one and only board in the club. they do have a handicap champ and have got to the semi final of twice, but only qualified for the scratch half once and got beat in the only match i played by a guy off +3 who didn't even make the final himself

Firstly, Is it fair that 1 person should be able to win all 4, its not like a Cat 3 or 4 player is going to compete for lowest gross so why should a Cat1 player on a good day sweep up?
Secondly we have 10yrs longer history (1905) than your nett comp :ears:

You have to play off less than 9 or maybe 6 to enter at my place but the last major board comp I entered I came dead last, just in front of the NR gang!
this was due to me being utter pants at the game but also my handicap had to be played to a lower score and not full!

Na, the scratch is obviously harder to win; any hacker can win the net.

I know where you are coming from but you are ignoring the talent and years of practice that people need to ever be in a position to win the scratch. Even if only a handful of players on the day of the championship are good enough to win it has been a long hard process for them to get to that level.
Consider a 24 handicapper, which comp is easier for him to win?

from personal experience anyone off about 4 or 5 at a club with a reasonably deep talent pool has virtually no chance of winning either the main event or a handicap championship

I do agree. An extension would be its harder on the day to win a monthly stableford. Which by definition makes the nett club champs a glorified monthly stableford, only with a bigger trophy
You also overlook, it takes some (including a few in here), years of practice to maintain a double digit handicap. You can buy that type of dedication
Being high single figure handicapper, I would rather come top 5 in the scratch than win the nett,
I remember my 3x 3rd places, which the last one was 9 years ago, more than what I've won in the last year.
I appreciate that some golfers won't reach a level where they measure their gross score against par of the course, but for me that is the measure rather than an artificial calculation.
