Mental Game Advice

Maybe, maybe not. As I got it free then I've nothing to lose. My teaching pro has been banging on about a better pre-shot routine to back up the work we've done on the swing. If it works then fine. If not its cost me nowt and I can try something else

That's the price point that everyone likes ;)

But, if you had to pay for it?? Pre shot academy!!! Come on, really!!??

I have an interest in golf psychology and read many of the books with interest but you can take instruction too far.

On the Ping ProAm this week I asked our pro Matt Nixon what he thought was important to think about in his golf swing and he majored on having a plan for every shot. He talked about taking the right club and what to do to pull off exactly the shot he saw that he needed ie low, high, spin or not, where to land it, how to take the trouble out. He said to never hit a shot without, at least, knowing what the ideal result would be. Sound advice, especially when you hear him talk it through with his caddy.

Interestingly for me we did it before we both played into a green from almost the same place. He talked me through how he would plan the shot, it was only a 9 iron or wedge, I hit, with his advice, a 9 iron pin high but played to the safer side 10 foot from the pin - he missed the green!

I might start up a "post shot Academy"

How to grin and hide your innermost anguish
How to effectively find your ball in the rough
How to plumb the depths of lakes simply
Wading for beginners
How to rip your glove off effectively
How to stomp off an 18th green with panache

I suppose there are some prats around that would benefit

How much you charging?

Is that with accommodation?

Accommodation could be sorted Geezer.
A nice timbered lodge with ropes hanging from the rafters.
Glove on, step over the line into the zone, play shot, step back over the line, glove off. Time for a chat.

It refreshing to see some real thought has gone into your project and your not just preying on gullible golfers. ;)

For me the biggest issues with the mental aspect of game are :
- Recovering from an error (bad shot, bad hole etc)
- Selecting the right shot for the circumstances (mostly when it means playing more conservatively)
- Dealing with being in a good position and not blowing it

Mostly these are examples of mental disciple needed when under pressure.

When I play a bad shot, especially if I'm doing well and have a score going at the time, it sets my mind racing with attempts to get that shot back so I need to accept the situation and play the shot in front of me without compounding the problem by taking on (and failing at) a risky shot and running up a big number.

The second point is what you would probably recognise as course management but having the mental discipline to make the right choice, again particularly when chasing something, is a challenge.

On the last point, I mean that feeling of being "on a score" but letting your mind get ahead of itself, thinking many shots ahead or thinking negative thoughts like "don't blow it" which shifts the focus away from executing the golf shot.

You sound very sensible

Homer - I am not making fun of you. Below, I am talking about the product you have referred to.

Pre? Shot? Academy? What a total and utter crock of unmentionable. At first I thought it was a comedic parody and then was stunned as I realised that these guys are genuinely peddling this as a marketable item. Words fail me.

I don't read psychology books, they state the obvious and generally waffle on about what would be common sense to normal people. However I do like anthropology, now that is interesting. Watch a successful golfer, a low one or a pro, look at the body language listen to the comments. I realised I was negative, it was a time in my life where I was struggling to find anything positive, I lost confidence in myself and everyone around me. I am still a sceptic, or realist, but on the golf course I fall into a different mind set. There are bad shots, I will hit them, I will hit great shots as well, all I need to do is move on from both. But I must understand why they were bad. When I do I will go and practice them out.
