matchplay & strokeplay

Do you mean play in an official medal and an official matchplay comp at the same time or play in a medal and have a bit of fun playing a match alongside?

We use have lots matchplay bets with mates playing in other games, using the official stroke play score card results .

Using stroke index , no gimmies obviously, have as many bets as you like.

There's nothing to stop you using an official strokeplay scorecard as the basis of a matchplay-style side bet with mates. It's no different to betting on flies crawling up a window. But your side bet is not a proper matchplay match - as you'd not be following the proper rules.

I know it's come up before but cannot find it in search but can you on the same day and on the same course.

a. Play a stroke play comp and then play a matchplay comp
or
b. Play a matchplay comp followed by a stroke play comp.

For some reason I think b is ok and a is a no no.

Advice and rule number would be appreciated .

A is not allowed, B is ok

Rule 7-1a and 7-1b

However, The committee may, in the conditions of a competition (Rule 33-1), prohibit practice on the competition course on any day of a match play competition or permit practice on the competition course or part of the course on any day of or between rounds of a stroke play competition.

Looking at rules...

http://www.randa.org/Rules-of-Golf/MainRules/7-Practice/SubRules/1-Before-or-Between-Rounds

a. Match Play

On any day of a match play competition, a player may practise on the competition course
before a round.

b. Stroke Play

Before a round or play-off on any day of a stroke play competition, a competitor

must not practise on the competition course
or test the surface of any putting green
on the course
by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.

When two or more rounds of a stroke play competition are to be played over consecutive days, a competitor

must not practise between those rounds on any competition course
remaining to be played, or test the surface of any putting green
on such course
by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.

I still read it as ...you can practise/play on course before match play but not play/practise before a medal???

Confused.com ???

The "default position" of the rule is that you cannot practice on the course on the day of a stroke completion but there is no such restriction prior to match play. That means you could a) play in the stroke competition and then in a match play tie but not b) play in the match play tie first, followed by the stroke competition.

A condition of competition can, however, be introduced permitting practice on the course before a stroke competition.
That would mean you could play your match play tie before competing in the stroke competition.

A condition of competition can be introduced prohibiting practice on the course before a match play competition.
That would mean you could not play in the stroke competition before the match play tie.

I think you need to read the rule more carefully. Strokeplay first, matchplay second is fine (option a). Other way round (option b) is not ok.
