Matchplay - incorrect information

Nope.

Good luck in your next OOM matches. Doubt I'll see you on finals day, you'll be teeing off about 30mins before me....

Might be driving up to the open for the Monday game - might knock on the rules official's door.:)

Do so mate. Just got that email forwarded from you, from yet another rules official that you independently sourced and emailed (with inaccuracies on your account). It's quite unbelievable that you've taken it to the level you have. It was great to see in the response that 'you have a responsibility to watch all shots' etc. I actually chuckled.

I'm sure you won't mind me popping that email on here (dots)..........? Although, I'd hope you would (dots)......

Our guys (GM and official R&A rules bods) decision not satisfy you??

What a sad, sad situation you've made of this. You should be ashamed and embarrassed for taking it this far. Particularly as you're all about 'the laugh'. Not.

Banter ripped out of the heart of the NWOOM as we know it and the comp, for me, has now been soured, massively and I'm considering pulling out. I've even been labelled a cheat in this thread (tongue in cheek is irrelevant with association).

I won't be at Beau Desert with you for that open. Birchy, if you are cringing at this post and do see it, please offer my spot out and stick my entry fee into my Scotland kitty. Thank you! If it doesn't selll, happy to lose it.

Just you remember, the next time you're playing with anyone (bounce or not) and you, in 'banter', tell them (normally me plus 3 or 4 others) "lots of left to right here" or "make sure you reach" - don't be surprised if someone picks up on you and claims the hole or does you for 2 shots (8.1 or 8.2) cos you've been doing this since I've known you. It's alright then, eh? But no, that's not double standards, is it (more dots).........

One thing I know is, that it won't be with me.

If you can give, take.

Thats the disappointing thing here. The desperation. And you can't even see it. Even worse.

Top work, 'kidda'.

Top, top, work.

I'm off for a curry.

I could rip this apart if I wanted to, and all I was after was a correct ruling or advice.

Too much respect for you to do it on here though. Nice one.

Stuey, send it to Mr B, think it was £45.

Pete, I do believe you brought this here so go for it.

It's welcome.

E-mail sent to an online golf rules lady, going under askLinda:-

Peter, the Rules do not contemplate this situation, so a decision would have to be made "in equity" [Rule 1-4]. The Committee would have to interview you, your opponent, and the third player, and decide what penalty to impose, if any. If everything you say is absolutely accurate, the decision might be to disqualify your opponent from the hole (loss of hole), or even disqualification from the match, if they decide this was a serious breach of etiquette.

All of that being said, there is a lesson for you here. When you are playing a match, you should observe every shot by your opponent. If a lost scorecard (or club) needed to be returned, the person to do it should have been the player who was not involved in the match. If there is no third player with you, hold the scorecard (or the club) and give it to a marshal. You don't ever want to be absent when your opponent is hitting.

Hi Linda,

I think you provide a great service to the golf community, BTW.

I would like your thoughts on the following scenario that happened to me yesterday:-

Tonight's scenario:- 2 people playing a match and another guy who is also just playing alongside us as a host, at his club.

Par 4 Player A is giving player B a shot.

Player A is near the green in two and is next to play.

Player B and the host have hit balls into the green from a distance away but neither shots were seen by player A, as he had gone to another golf group to give them a dropped scorecard back.

One ball is through the green, the other is approx 8 foot away from the flag.

Player A asks player B whose ball is the close one, and whose is through the green. Player B says that his is the close one (it wasn't). Player A then knowing he probably needs to play it very close to the pin tries a flop shot.............

Then Player B walks up to the ball through the green with a wedge........the result of the hole ends up as a halve, but Player A would have taken a different shot option if he would have been given the correct information.

Now the misunderstanding is that player B was "joking", player A didnt realise and picked his shot based on the information given.

Does player B lose the hole?

Obviously the rules dont say such words as sarcasm/joking etc.......it says lots about advising the wrong number of strokes, but I cant see where it says about advising info about saying your ball is one ball, when in fact it wasnt.

I would be very glad of your thoughts, as in the end the game was either won 2 and 1 (if loss of hole does not occur), or all square if it did.

Best regards,

For clarification, unless I have lied anywhere.

End of thread, the rest can be dealt with offline.

Never said you lied, said there were inaccuracies. Not mentioning asking a question to someone upwind, and into a 3 club wind, for one. And yes, there was one, because we were hitting 300yd drives on one hole. I almost got a twitch when I saw I'd out driven both of you on a Par 4 that was 334yrds or sommat.

The rest can be dealt with offline? There's nowt to sort out. If I stay in the NWOOM, you've lost the game. If I don't, then I didn't exist for match purposes. What else do you mean, please explain. It's your thread after all.

Ever thought that it could have been sorted without it even coming on here in the first place?

And to the forummer who pm'd me, ya inbox is full.

On that I totally agree.:(

I just tried ringing you.

Shouldnt have stuck it on the forum in the first place then, I think you realise this. I'll stand my ground to any man if there's cause too. If there isn't, I'll bow out gracefully, publicly if necessary....

And I couldn't answer your call, I was just down the offy buying another 3l bottle of white lightening*

To be honest, I'd prefer for 'the rest' to be sorted online, as that's how it started. However, as the OP, its your choice to request that the thread is locked, I believe.

Hopefully, if you do request that, then as the OP you'll do the right thing in closing and all faith in humanity will be restored.

*in reference to the voicemail inferring that I was drunk when I posted my constructive and despondent post. This despite the fact that I teed off in the club comp at 3:21pm.

OK, have it your way.

You could have still called me back, still up for another hour.

I've pointed out on here that you are a good man, I've also pointed out that you didnt deliberately mislead me, you were just joking, but it led me to play a different shot because you didnt correct my thinking before I played my shot.

This 3 club wind is a crock of - I maintain that all words were heard in the conversation - you know that. We all know that. No gesturing, no hard of hearing - everything was heard very clearly by all parties.

I put it in the forum to ask a rules question, no names mentioned. No-one has given me a definitive answer, and only give me possible outcomes, including possible disqualification, which I categorically wouldnt want. I also said this thread wasnt about characterisation and just about the rule, if there is one. You have turned this into a personal thing.

I tried phoning you to try to patch up and come to some common ground.

I'm still here.

I think we both feel aggrieved here, and this is not the place to continue it. Its blown up out of all proportion, and to the detriment of both of us.

I'm angry over some things, you too, obviously.

No 2-bit trophy is worth losing a mate over.

Happy to discuss things privately, you have my number. No dots or smiley required.

Peter
