This confusion was caused by an incomplete first post. My post, which @doublebogey7 replied to, was made without the detail that permission was given to mark the ball. A lot of posts on this part of the forum don’t give the whole story and this leads to wrong answers and thread drift.

The first post was not incomplete and didn’t need to be noted, the only question was related to the player knocking his ball back.

I get that. But he made a fuss after his playing partner had done the self same thing!

I wasn’t there Billy, the question came up in the bar afterwards, maybe he didn’t see his partner knock the ball away after marking it, or, (tbh) he was probably being an arse.

It’s also worth noting that as much as 14.1b is quite clear there are also no consequences or penalties for a breach of this Rule.

As clarified in this thread, post no 30 a few years back.

(1) Meaning of Interference by Another Player’s Ball. Interference under this Rule exists when another player’s ball at rest:

• Might interfere with the player’s area of intended stance or area of intended swing,
• Is on or close to the player’s line of play such that, given the intended stroke, there is a reasonable chance the player’s ball in motion could hit that ball, or
• Is close enough to distract the player in making the stroke.

One of my mates keeps asking for nearly every ball on a green to be marked...
