So...

1st hole - partner is in an area marked as GUR but sitting nicely. NPOR is in the rough so decides not to drop but play it as it lay. I had a thought it was compulsory to drop out of GUR - or am I wrong?

6th hole - repair work being done to bunker face and marked as GUR on the grass immediately out of the bunker. My ball rolls in from there and is close enough to the concrete slabs used to temporarily support the face that my follow through would hit them. GUR marking impossible in the sand though so do I get a free drop away?

9th hole - opponent is in a fairway bunker but stuck right on the face in a rabbit hole. Free drop, NPOR within 1 club length but the steepness of the face meant it would always run back more than a club length. Does she get to place in the bunker and therefore not drop/plug?

Thanks :mmm:

1) Think this is covered by a local rule. On the back of our card it states 'relief MUST be taken from GUR'

2) I would have thought the whole bunker was GUR therefore drop outside

3) The ball must be dropped as close as possible to the spot where it keeps rolling away NNTP but also no in a hazard.

1. I don't believe it is compulsory unless stipulated by the committee as "GUR; play prohibited" in the local rules. Prior to prohibiting play from an area of ground under repair, it is important that the Committee assess the relief that will be available to the player. It would be inequitable to make a player take relief from an area that would normally be reasonable for play when the player’s nearest point of relief is in bushes, trees or some other unplayable position.

2. Again I think it has to be determined by the local rule doesn't it? The Committee may wish to restrict relief from seams of new turf to the lie of the ball and the area of intended swing only by introducing the recommended Local Rule

3. I would say after 2 drops if it rolls then it should be placed as near as possible to the spot where it first struck a part of the course when re-dropped.

Hi Amanda. I was beginning to be concerned that you must be having such boring golf these days that we weren't getting your questions. But all is well with a 3-in-one bumper bundle.

1. Yes you were wrong, I'm afraid. You can normally play your ball as it lies in an abnormal ground condition . In the case of GUR, however, the Committee may for the protection of the course make it mandatory to take relief. Check the local rules.

2. I don't see the GUR as relevant. The concrete slabs are an obstruction from which you can a) take relief without penalty but the NPR must be in the bunker and the ball must be dropped in the bunker or b) go back as far as you like outside the bunker, keeping the hole and where the ball was in line under 1 penalty stroke. Rule 24-2b(ii) [By the way, a bunker face marked off as GUR would not make the whole bunker GUR]

3. What was the question again? Ah yes, a question to be answered with a question. We need to know the nature of the bunker face - was it earth, stacked turf or grass?

I know Colin and I too was getting worried about my lack of issues on the course. As I'm playing for the new club on Thursday in a "scratch" match I best know what's what!

3. The ball came to rest in the front top face of the bunker but in a scraping - so it was still in the bunker (sand). The face of the bunker was sand (with way too many stones!!) and the slope meant that her ball didn't stay where dropped but rolled down the slope.

I can't answer the question, but can advise that when dropping, although you drop within 1 club length of the NPR, the ball can roll a further 2 club lengths before a re-drop is required.

I have since read this and it would have been within that parameter for sure. Mind you there were so many stones that it didn't plug at all and, rather annoyingly, I once again heard the "5 nett 4" by the hole end

As Woody69 says, if it rolls more than 2 club lengths, re-drop; if it rolls more than 2 club lengths again, place the ball where it struck the course on the re-drop.

Remember it is 2 club lengths from where it strikes the course - which may or may not be one club length from the NPR.
