As a thought, could he have hit a provisional and then, when the found his ball, declared it unplayable then gone to his provision. Or would he have had to go back to the tee as the act of finding the ball renders the provisional unusable?

Cool. Thanks. He could still have called unplayable and gone back to the tee. Suppose it wouldnt be right if his provisional went in the hole, you'd call your first unplayable every time.
