What's the general opinion of Martin Laird? I have a suspicion that this boy can become and will become a major champion in the next 5 years. I remember last year being laughed at when I said on here that Laird is very Luke Donald-ish in the way that he approaches the game. He just flies below the radar quietly going about his business. Like Donald he seems to have that ability to creep up the leaderboard and stay there.

Laird is long, gas a very good long game and an unflappable demeanor on the course. Just a bit more work with the short stick, well belly putter in his case and greenside and I am confident he can walk away with a big one.

I was thinking the same thing. He had a good year last year, but i think this could be his breakthrough year and he gets the credit he deserves.

One to watch for 2012

I think your right with this he seems to keep produced steady results and is seems close to making the step up to the top echelons maybe a Ryder cup appearance this year?

Craw think you are spot on with this one, Laird is a solid player and only the putting lets him down.
I heard he plans to play more in Europe this year to try and win a place at the Ryder cup.

It could be his year but his putter can get very, very cold.

If he gets a good weekend with his belly putter then there is no reason why he can't win a major.

Have watched him on the PGA TOUR for the past 3 seasons and he just seems to get better every time. He doesn't seem to get the same adulation as or airtime as the Americans on the TV .

He didn't look comfortable from 120 yards and in but he's obviously worked on that and looked really solid in this weeks event.

He seems to come good at the end of the season but hopefully he can pick up a few wins this season.

...and from interviews I've seen he actually seems like a nice guy too !!!

Americans probably love him as he's been over there for so long they will be trying to adopt him.

Hoping he will follow up last year's sucesses with anther great season this year - certainly appears to have upped his game of late so I wouldn't be suprised to see him pick up a few nice tropheys.

A strong Ryder cup contender.

I think he is from the same mould as Furyk, Davis Love and monty pretty good player, not quite as memorable as some others but solid week in and out performance.

Yep agree with everything that has been said above! Don't know if he has qualified for it, but he might be a good one for the matchplay in tuscon coming up.

I have a sneaky feeling Mr Laird could well be there at Chicago come September or October, whenever it is.

Seemed like a nice guy when I spoke to him for a magazine interview a couple of years ago when I think he'd just holed a gritty 8-footer on the final green of the final event to keep his card. Has really gone from strength to strength since then.

Wonder how things would have panned out if that 8-footer had slid by?

Playing at the Machrihanish March Madness 2012 trip?

Not sure he'd have qualified!

Actually, seem to remember him saying it would have been disappointing, but not the end of the world, and that he was confident that he would have got enough starts the following year to put things right.

I really rate the guy. I think he will do really well at Augusta. Second time of asking so he is more familiar with the course. Hi is straight enough but his putting might be his nemesis. He finished 16th last year in his first Masters so he should be a great each way bet. I might put a few on him on Betfair now.

he goes for it as well which will either put him in contention if on form. Also good to get a Scotsman playing well, goodness knows we need some.

Agree, he looks a very good prospect. His experiance in America will help Europe should he get into the Ryder Cup team.

He's playing more in Europe this season I think!
