Anybody have any real life experiences? Whether it be own, work on etc?

I've found most of the typical issues online so far an on Facebook groups but unfortunately this just gives the negative aspect of owning one not the good experiences. Alternatively the perspective of an enthusiast who is blinded by his love for Land Rovers no matter their woes and will always tell you to get one.

I'm open to alternatives also but the Discovery seems to tick all the boxes.

- Looks Nice
- 5 Seats and loads of space
- 7 seats and some space with over configurations to get a bit more space.
- 4x4
- Plenty of comfort and bells and whistles.
- Good for towing

Anybody opted for something else instead of the discovery?

Heard nightmares about the crank etc. but I think most cars have their major issues that could be quite costly if you were unlucky enough.

I have a Defender for off road stuff so that doesn't change, the partner has a good daily for long commutes with decent MPG.

It also allows me and golf buddies to go away in just this on weekends away, same with scratch team and ferrying around the junior team occasional when necessary.

Can't seem to find anything else currently that is ticking all the boxes.

I do a bit of towing now and again, have a TD5 which is great on the B roads but anything including a decent jaunt on the motorway i'd be able to use the discovery instead.

Budget is up to 20k.

XC90.

My criteria was much the same as yours, i tried Disco, X5, Q7 and XC90 and the volvo won hands down.

Mate of mine has just sold one he'd had for a couple of years. He's glad to see the back of it. Ticked the boxes for capacity and pulling power but in his words the build quality was appalling.

Some warranty companies exclude the crank. If you go ahead get a warranty and check what they'll cover.

Old man has had one for a few years as a company car.
Has thrown some massive bills in that time including a gearbox.
Old man loves it but doesn’t have to pay the repair bills.

£20k buys you a fully loaded Kia Sorento KX4 with 3.5 yr warranty left if you can get past the badge. Interior quality is good these days (not German for sure but were are not talking German money).

Wife has a 62 plate which we bought for towing, I’m towing a 1600kg caravan and it feels like it isn’t pulling anything. 2000kg kerb weight , self levelling suspension and plenty of torque. It’s a great tow car. Boot is huge , even using 7seats there is still enough room for a few sets of golf clubs.

After 3 years of trouble free ownership it broke down 2 weeks ago, an impellor in the fuel system disintegrated and caused quite a mess. It’s repaired now and I picked it up earlier. Bill to me £38 for a new fuel filter , bill to Kia UK for warranty work over £3k.

It’s strikes me as a no brainer and it will be replaced before the warranty is out in November with another with 3-4 warranty left.

Thanks all seems a common vibe towards these, I'm mindful of some of the common issues including the crank, electric parking brake, air suspension etc. Fortunately due to my defender ownership I do know a independent specialist who carries out all work should I buy one he would continue to do so at quite a competitive rate.

I might opt to get something towards the £15k mark and allow £5k for any necessary work should I get very unlucky. Ive heard both horror stories and the flip side where people wouldn't own anything else. Fortunately I'm used to maintenance costs as I'm not known for my sensible car choices so I understand it can be part and parcel.

I can't deny they are probably the most sensible and actually superior option but they're just not for me unfortunately. We have a Audi S7 so have the comfort, refinement and build quality option there. This is more of a toy with its practical purposes so if it does have any issues it can afford to be in the garage for a few days here and there and won't be covering huge amounts of miles.
