Our club is proposing lowering the senior section age from 55 to 50,can anyone point out to me the advantages for our club to do this, have many other clubs done this and how as it worked out?

The advantage, if you see it that way, is that more of your members will qualify to play in the seniors comps. Presumably the section is getting a little thin and this is a way to fill it out again.

I can't help with the second part of your question I'm afraid.

Could get tricky if you play matches against other clubs and their Seniors age is different.

Could be wrong but I think it’s 50 at our club. Obviously a lot of opens are 55+

Our club is 55 it can be a bit awkward when we have matches against clubs where it is 60 so I imagine it would be even more awkward if the gap is 50 to 60.

If these are handicapped friendlies, does the age difference matter so much? If in a competitive format, can terms of comp set an age limit?

It’s a sensible thing imo.
from 50 to 55 your sort of in limbo Competition wise.
I wasn’t good enough any more to hack it in the scratch team but to young to play for the seniors.
if it’s a handicap event no problem as a said above.
it’s just a number

Being 49 this year if you told me I’d be a senior next year I’d take up bowls

The PGA Senior tours are 50.
When Seniors sections first became a 'thing' in the 1960's it was always over 50 in the East of Scotland clubs and Counties.

EngGolf use 50 for Seniors...... 60 years is the Vets. Can't see a problem if 50's play against 55years or 60 years as the H/cap will deal with it & in any case they are friendly Comps, Just get on with it.

I play golf with a guy at our club who,s in his 60,s . He jokes “thank god you’re not old enough to play senior’s yet “.
I think he doesn’t want more competition 😂
Our starts at 55

55 Newport and 60 at Saunton. I was delighted at being told I was too young to join the latter!
…and there was me thinking 😉

Fortunately I qualify on both counts…though I was in denial until I passed the latter 🙄

It's always been 55 where I've played, but I've also always wondered why that number seems to have been decided upon. Seems 50 or 60 is more logical.

I suspect you are referring to the senior series which is 50, but you cannot represent England Seniors until you are 55 and all scratch events are 55. I understand though that they are discussing lowering that to 50. All Regional and County events to my knowledge are also 55 currently.
