I stopped willy waving years ago, however chatting to our pro a week or two back, he said that he was interested in peoples driving distances, so on a quiet round they picked a straight level fairway and all hit driver, they averaged a carry distance of between 240-260 yards, that fourball consisted of 1 pro, 1 scratch and 2 +2 golfers. Overall distance on a downhill hole with dry running conditions and the wind behind don't really count for much.

Phil, download google earth and use the ruler function, you can use yards, metres etc.



Gents, one thing we all need to remember is that 360 yards on one course is 250 on another. Average them out and most guys would average out at 220-230. Yesterday I carried two drives 285-290 (pretty much stopped where they landed due to wetness) does this mean I average 290? does it chuff. Then there is the fact I hit a high ball, someone could punch it low and still hit it further too given the right conditions, people get too wound up about distance. It is all about keeping it in play.

ah sorted thanks guys, well i can now say for sure that ive never struck a ball 300 yards!

best according to google maps is pushing towards 280, usually about 225.

Think my average drives must be around 250-280, quite a big difference but i really have to catch on to hit it 300+, id much rather be in the middle of the fairway than 300+ left or right, think the longest ive ever hit was 370 but that was thanks to a few cart paths that ran across a downsloped fairway lol also was downwind as i remember so quite a bit of luck involved

One of the things that amuses me about all this is that people don't really pay that much attention. I can see that most of the people who state they have that kind of length also state that they usually hit a shorter club on the tee anyway. That to me shows that they are probably telling the truth as no-one with a lowish handicap is going to hit an iron off the tee and rule out getting on in regulation on a par 4 just to hit the fairway. There's no gain in that.

300 yards in the rough with a wedge or 9 iron is better than 200 yards in the fairway with a 3 iron in your hand in my opinion. But likewise 250 yards in the fairway with a wedge in your hand is better than 300 yards in the rough having to carry a delicate little flop shot over a deep bunker to a tight pin.

It's all about what is going to give you the best options.

There are some proper big hitters on here, many of which I have played with. I need my Sunday best to catch up with their shonky ones. I have a driver swing speed averaging 96mph (from a titleist fitting) that gives me a carry of around 220 ish (again, from the fitting). If I really lean on it, and the gods are with me, I can hit it further, but not to order.

Given that roll out should be around 10% that should mean, all things being equal, that I average about 242 yards. I would say that I am nearer to 250, but then I would. I probably only remember the long ones. Every now and then I get a ripper, but we are talking a couple of times a year, and I know it will be one mid swing. Hence I can fire up the gps measure, and see how far it was.

I have only ever measured one drive, that was the one Imurg mentioned earlier but at a guess I'm somewhere around 220 to 230 carry. What I do know is most of the time I'm consistent and straight and that'll do for me.

Funny thing is, if we drain a long putt we tend to think of it as being lucky. Hit a long drive and we measure, hope others see it and save it on our hard drive. The day i knew i was never going to hit the ball that far I decided to practice more on my short game. I'll stick with my short game thanks, even if I'm hitting to the green first with a four iron when my mates are hitting a seven.

I never measure but played the PGA a few months ago and on the Par 5 second hole hit a great drive past the left hand bunker from the whites. Measured with the skycaddie and it came to 260yds, surprised as I'm not a slouch but maybe some of our drives arent as long as we think.

I once drove our 4th green which is 401yds, but its downhill and I had a back wind. Not sure how windy it was but when I got to the 10th which is 168yds and into the wind I needed the driver there too.

I agree, nearly got sucked into his practice swing slipstream a couple of times yesterday. First time I played with him I thought they were airshots.

I wonder if all the Long Drivers who "average" 280+ are taking the average of all their really, really good drives and forgetting to add in the clonkers that go 80 yards along the ground..........
