Longest drive ?

piss of snelly, i still remember your drive down the first at the blackmoor meet..... that was monster!

i think you hit the nail on the head there though, a long driver doesnt make it your average drive, two totally different things.

My biggest drive was at the back of the green on a 360 yard par 4, the first 220 yards are flat and then its down hill to the green.

I was pleased as there are bunkers at the front so it must have had enough to jump over them.

I think what makes a big drive is the carry, sure alot of people can get maybe another 50- 80 yards roll on a good day with a good bounce.

I'm comfotable with my driving distance, average about 250 yards (if it goes straight) with conditions at the moment, if somebody can hit it further fair play to them.

Its the people who review drivers on american golf and other websites i don't believe new driver equals 300 yards every time for a 20 handicapper lol

hmm i drive over 200 pretty much all the time these days, but doubt ive ever really troubled 300yards no matter the tail wind or sweetness of strike.

but who knows with some practice ill get there, no reason not too, but ill be spending more time on my scoring and im sure with more rounds the length will continue to increase slowly.

played with brendy and he hits the ball a mile, and i played regularly with a couple of pros and one of them hits the ball a country mile aswell. so i know what long is, i just cant compete with it. :)

Yes I can get it out there a good distance... but I am far from accurate with my driver and 3 wood at the moment. So I can hardly say I hit it over 300 yards consistently. I can get it past that... but more often than not I'm around the 260-280 range in the rough right now with the driver.

I find myself hitting a lot of irons off the tee right now to keep it straight. Although my 2 iron is still pretty long at around the 240+ mark on average with my best on sunday getting out to around 270 or so. (just measured it on google maps to make sure I was about right with that.)

I had forgotten that! Just about on the green so that was 325 yards maybe? :D

Of course it was Swinger who won the longest drive competition that day though.....

Aww shucks young man thanks! :D

Phil, download google earth and use the ruler function, you can use yards, metres etc.

Gents, one thing we all need to remember is that 360 yards on one course is 250 on another. Average them out and most guys would average out at 220-230. Yesterday I carried two drives 285-290 (pretty much stopped where they landed due to wetness) does this mean I average 290? does it chuff. Then there is the fact I hit a high ball, someone could punch it low and still hit it further too given the right conditions, people get too wound up about distance. It is all about keeping it in play.

Our 13th is a 316 yard (yellows 292) par 4. It runs slightly downhill and is reached through a funnel of trees. I drive the green about 6 times a year - last time about 6 weeks ago. The conditions have to be perfectly still to get there but there are loads of bigger hitters than me at the club and now I'm pushing 60 its likely to become a once a year job - we have a Texas scramble this week end so I hope that conditions will be favourable!

how can i check distance on google maps?

just interested to try that myself

Phil

Go to Google maps on the website as normal and select the map labs from settings. One of the options in there is the distance measuring tool. Enable that and save the changes to the settings. There will be a little ruler in the bottom left of the sat image. Click that and a toolbar on the left comes up to measure from point to point. (hint: Yards is available in the I'm feeling geeky options).

I use it a lot on courses I don't know to get a feel for any carries or run-outs on doglegs.

More like top 20 in driving distance, whole different league in GIR, FIR, Putts, Sand Saves, Carpark bullplop, Clubhouse Bullplop and also shandy drinkers. If it wasnt for all them, they cudda been a contenda!!

....Still not sure it counted though as I only used a 3 wood!:D

I drove neigh on pin high in the morning on the first but my afternoon effort saw me with a full 9 iron in from the 18th fairway. I guess that puts my average driving distance at about 255 on that hole at least.

That's what 3 pints at lunchtime does to me too.....

I never knew you used a 3 wood for that!? Long..................................................

Played a guy off 2 a couple of years ago in a matchplay in my old club , out drove him all day , pinged drives 30yrds + past him .I was man enough to shake his hand on the 16th green & wish him luck in the next round aswell :(

More like a long story!! I must confess it was the big stick.

And I definatly blame the beer for the 1st in the afternoon. That and Smiffys group trying to cut in front of us.

Ah that old chesnut eh??

A few guys on here appear to be in the top 20 of PGA stats........whatever.:D

I find these types of threads midly amusing. Almost every one claims to hit the ball 300+ yards. If you look at the top tour pro's only a few of them do that.

I am a good driver of the ball and play golf with some other good golfers and I have seen a few 300 yarders and hit a few myself but only when the ground is dry and hard and the ball bounces and rolls on a long way. The average drive most mid to high handicappers hit is around 200/220 yards carry. You can only count the carry, a level fairway and no wind, otherwise its not repeatable.

What I don't find mildly amusing is posts on threads like this that insinuate that anyone who states on this forum that they hit the ball further than what is considered average for a club golfer is a delusional, misguided, slow witted fantasist.

Just because you are a green eyed weakling with no sense of timing or sporting excellence, doesn't mean everyone is like that...

:D :D :D

Not a weakling or green eyed, have great timing, have excelled at many sports in my life (Athletics, Rugby, squash and golf) Have played off low single figures for longer than you have probably been out of short pants (or maybe thats not so long)

"Delusional, misguided, slow witted fantasist" Well thats your words son but if the cap fits, as they say.

What I find amusing is the arguing between the long hitters and the short hitters...

On a serious note, there is no doubt at all that there are a fair few big hitters out there, who are not PGA tour pros.

I think the real mirth from the doubters is around the number of them. I've seen swing videos and heard the tales from meets of some guys here, and there is no doubt they can do it. However when 90% of the forum can do it, it does seem a bit strange that 90% of the people you see at your club cannot.

I think the other factor is that to hit a big drive, you need decent mechanics, and to hit the ball somewhere near the centre of the club. It does seem a bit odd that all these 20 handicappers can find the centre of the club with the driver, but not the following wedge to the green.

Finally, we've all boomed the odd shot miles out there, normally with some help from a following gale, the cart path and the fairway being 300ft below the tee, this doesn't mean this is now our average shot.

As for me, I don't know what camp I am in, I hit it somewhere around 250-260, not really long, not really short.

My post was meant to be tongue in cheek hence the smileys but never mind. Thanks for putting me straight Dad. Got to dash, it's a school night.

Snelly.
