Long term golf club upkeep

I know where you're coming from I've bought new irons. But instead of cleaning them after every round - I do so once a month. Because you don't want to expose them to warm water for too long - especially if they are forged irons.

Also I tend to do it 1 club at a time - so soak for 2-3 mins - take out and whilst I'm cleaning/drying put another one in. DO NOT put your woods, driver or putter in them though! A quick dip, scrub and dry is all they need.
I have a separate dish cloth to clean grips and shafts.

Also I would recommend that you change your grips every year depending on how often you play! Definitely no more than 2 years.

Also I think the key to longevity of club is clean grooves/dirt after each shot and buy some head covers for them.

My method is:

10L of boiling hot water and fairy liquid, leave it to cool for about 5 minutes.

Dip each club into the solution, then with a steamed towel dry off the club head.

I do this for each club head and then afterwards I use a toothbrush and tooth pick to go along each groove.

Final dip in the water and a quick dry with a fresh towel.

My final groove has a white line so I know when its clean.

I think some of you guys have way too much time on your hands. A wipe with a towel after every shot and a scrape of the grooves with a tee peg as you walk down the fairway is ample. Scrub the grips every couple of months.

I make sure my clubs dry out after a round, I do this by leaving them in the boot between rounds.

To clean my clubs mid round I spit on them or my towel and rub the spit into the club face, thus loosening any dirt.

My balls get cleaned in the same way as my clubs, or by being replaced when lost.

This! though I tend to use a fingernail rather than a tee peg.

Some serious rewording needed here though!

yeah it frees up more time to root around a lake with a ball retreiver

Todays top tip:
Bungee your irons to the roof rack when you get the car jet washed by the lads down at the car wash. Leave them on for the drive home and they'll be nice and dry ready to put away

Does all this submerging and wiping with clothes make you a better player?

not ness but when I told my mate how much I take care of my irons now he said "good your starting to think like a good golfer you want to keep your gear in the best nick so mud and grim cant be an excuse for a poor shot"

Kärcher steam cleaner gets the muck out of the grooves in seconds & the clubs are practically dry immediately. Trouble is, any time the wife sees me with it out she asks me to clean the floor tiles.

So after investing heavily in new equipment at the end of the season with the plan to keep it for many years .. I was looking into what people do to keep their equipment performing the best it can for years to come..

At the moment after every round I soak my irons in warm water with fairy liquid for 10 mins.. remove them and brush out the dirt in the groves. Quick cloth clean of the head , shaft and grips.. towel dry. move onto the next club.

long term (having never really cared for my golf gear before apart from a monthly clean) I was thinking re-grip the lot every 2-3 years.

going forward from there have people had much experience with groove sharpening and making the clubs look new again?

Look after your clubs and they will look after you and all that.

Anyone got any things they do? apart from go down American golf every year and buy new gear :p

Soaking for 10 minutes seems a bit overkill! Simply running or placing them under warm water whilst you wash away the dirt taking a few seconds for each club would be more than enough to keep any club clean and at its best. No issue with anything else stated

I had a set of irons with Lamkin full cord grips for 10 years. Cleaned them once a year and they were just fine.

On my woods I use the multi compound grips. Cord lasts for ever but the lower rubber section seems to be as smooth as a baby's bum after just one season.

If you want to be really anal, once you have washed and dried your woods give the upper painted surface a polish with a decent car wax. Autoglym works a treat.

😁 @"so mud and grim cant be an excuse for a poor shot"

If you hit a shot with crap on your club then you have to accept the consequences.

Agreed, I try and wet about a third of my towel which helps keep clubs clean during the round.

I always tend to give them a spring clean when going to play a top course also.

I don't want to burst your bubble but I've never met a good golfer that is so transfixed with cleaning his clubs. They are probably good golfers because they spend their free time practising not polishing

A wipe after every shot and use a wire brush on thr grooves

Will give the grips a good scrub once a year

Run under a tap and scrubbed with a nail brush then wiped over with a damp cloth and finally wiped dry after every round, change the grips probably once a year if I haven't already changed my clubs.

Recently aquired a year old set of 'Speedblades' VERY cheap (100 notes) so don't think I'll be changing again anytime soon.

i used to just stuff my clubs in the locker after I'd played, but since getting the MP 4's ive had to take them home and wipe and dry, or they just go very rusty... not sure whats different both prev sets were also forged and didn't have this problem

We actually have a very posh and fancy ultrasonic club cleaning machine at our club that is free to use, but I must admit that I very rarely do (it takes about ten minutes to finish and normally I am just not patient enough after a round to wait for it). I ususally just wipe any obvious mud and dirt off with a towel and only give them the thorough cleaning only twice a season or so (usually before I take the clubs with me on a holiday or the like).
