Having posted on Thursday about my trip to play Littlestone GC, just thought I would put on a few photos and a bit of a write up. One for you links guys in Scotland who are being affected by the weather.

Littlestone is located in Kent and is somewhat overshadowed by its more illustrious neighbours Royal St Georges, Deal and Princes. It is a straightforward out and back 18, with clever bunkering and slopes round the greens being more prevalent than knee-high rough and any blind shots.

When we got to the course at about 8.30am we had a chat with the greenkeeper and he said that they had a monsoon on Thursday night, so some of the bunkers were filled with water. The rest of the course was is excellent condition with the greens fast and true. I played the course late summer and the roll of the greens then were exemplary.

Weather-wise, we did not have any rain but the breeze started to pick-up in the morning and by mid-afternoon was becoming extremely challenging. Indeed by the time we finished, the wind was making it almost impossible to putt as the ball would wander off as you went to mark it.

Managed 36 holes with both rounds taking less than 3 hours and we struggled to keep up with the members who race around. We let a couple of guys go in front of us on the 1st tee and they must have both been in their late 60's early 70's - we had lost 2 holes to them when we finished our 18 (in 2hrs 50 mins!). Incedently, they were telling us that being amember at LGC gave them playing privilages at Royal St Georges, Deal and Princes whenever they wanted - not a bad perk!!

The golf was a case of the good, bad and ugly. In typical links style I hit my driver 150 yards (out of the pins as well!) and close to 300 downwind the next hole. Highlights included a par 5 halved in birdies and a par on the Par 4 SI1 where I hit driver, driver, 70 yard chip and run with a 6 iron and 20 foot putt.

I have taken a few photos (from my phone so excuse the quality) showing some of the holes. The course regards it's last three holes as extremely challenging and the 17th Par 3 is a fantastic hole. Hit driver both rounds and still ended up short!

Apologies if this is a bit of a long post and Mods feel free to move to the review section. Just thought as so many people have not had a chance to get a game due to the weather they may want to have a read.

Me driving for home on the 18th.

In summary - great friendly members and a fantastic course. Expect a little stuffiness and protocol, but it is worth it. Check out their website.

No Sorry

Still can't see it. It looks so bleak and uninteresting.
And where's the fun in trying to putt when the wind's blowing your ball away?

I played my heavily tree lined course two days ago in 30mph winds... impossible is the only way to describe it. You have to land the ball on a strip no wider than a bra strap, play to protected greens with no run off, lose a ball if you're more than 5 feet offline, water, grass, leaves, mud you name it. When the wind gets up it's unplayable.

I was a member of a links for a couple of years and it was so bland I hated it, like playing in a nuclear waste zone.
Not for me... although I've heard Littlestone is in good condition.

I like both links and parkland i prefer links because of the traditions of the game and its golf in it truest form parkland is IMO easier to keep your handicap lusher lies easier bunkers etc.

Look at the greatest competiton in golf (The Open) dont see many off them being help on Parkland courses.

Mind just now with all this weather 9 holes crazy golf would sufice ;)

As you say... tradition. I'd like to see the new Wentworth hold the Open but the traditionalists would want it on a links, preferably in Scotland so only about 1,000 people turn up who've seen it many times before.. and if possible they could play with hickory shafts and wear flat caps.

Littlestone is a lovely course, but best played on a flat calm day if possible!!
Played 36 holes there one day, the 17th (par 3) was a nice easy 7 iron in the morning. The tide turned in the afternoon. and with it came the wind and a full bloody 3 wood was needed to get you home...if you were lucky!
Nice course though.

Shakes head and sighs.....

Played a links course in the week - 2 ball in 3 hrs and we didn't rush, my shoes were cleaner when I left the course than when I started and I can wear my trousers again (no short putts!!), greens were like billard tables...oh yeah and there was no rain and the sun was out too....

No contest is correct - links is proper golf, and how the game was intended to be played....parkland is a mere convenient second best...

230,000 went to the last Open at Hoylake IIRC - I would imagine less than a quarter of that went to Wentworth last May....BMW driving bankers the lot of them....

No offence but that links course isnt very inspiring, in fact I prefer parkland, least you have something nice looking to work with.

Carnoustie is ugly. Bloody ugly.
But I don't think you'd play a better golf course.
And I'd hardly call the Nicklaus course at St Mellion "easy on the eye" but it's a superb track.

;)

Slightly disappointing to see more Parkland bashing.
I know of the course in the O.P. and I'm sure it's very good BUT there are good and bad of both.
I'm off to play an Open Q course today and wouldn't want to swap this for a good walk spoiled around an uber-bland piece of links tedium.
As a player on/at both, I concede a good links is hard to beat. If I could choose the Belfry or Royal St. D's I'd be off to Wales for the day. If the option was to play Blackwell or Aberdovey, the parkland gets the nod.
I think the romance is in the fact that the Open is played on links, and rightly so, but there are some cracking parkland courses which beat average links hands down.

I'll be seeing y'all when I've notched up a 79 by 5.00pm....

(not :))

I see the merit of both . . . I've not played much links golf, but Ballyliffin , Portstewart are phenominal links courses with spectacular views. I was looking at the Ballybunion website the other day and drooling !!!!

My only beef with exclusive links and parkland courses are the astronomical green fees. Unless there on 2 fore 1 of you go on a golf package type holiday its crazy money.

Nope, cannot see the appeal of a links myself, it's just personal preference, not having a go, I'm sure they are nice in summer but they just look barren and bleak places to be at this time of the year.

......but playable at least, not covered in snow.

I have to say that SOME links courses are very barren, bleak landscapes even in Summer but the best ones (Dornoch, Nairn, Ballybunion etc) are hand sculpted by God himself and are just THE best places on the planet on a balmy summer's evening when the wind has died down. Bliss.

18th Hole. Nairn GC. Mid May last year. Around 9pm! (Honestly. I checked the camera info.)

Not knocking the best parkland courses but you get a special atmosphere with the sound of waves lapping in the background.

You could pull your approach to that green 60 yrds left and still have a shot at an up and down.... at mine you'd already be writing BLOB on your card.

Sure when the wind gets up it's tricky to play an normal shot at a links but once you've learnt to trickle your shots along the ground you basically have it sussed!

I admit that I have seen some gorgeous looking little holes posted by forum members where the green is literally set into the rock side and looks stunning... at least that's more like it.

Well..... if you want to pull it 60 yards left on this one I'd be interested seeing the up and down. ;) ;)

There's probably a 40 acre clearing to the left of that yellow bush ;) ;) ;)

I was supposed to be playing at Princes tomorrow...
