I prefer links golf. A shame that I only play it so rarely. Maybe only twice a year at best I would say.

My top 8 links courses:

1. Royal County Down
2. Turnberry
3. Hillside
4. Saunton East
5. Muirfield
6. Macrihanish
7. Troon
8. Royal Birkdale

There are a few I haven't played that I think I would love too: Western Gailes, Carne, Rye, Cinque Ports, Gullane, Dornoch, Portrush, Ballybunion, Lahinch and Cruden to name just a few that I am very keen to play at.

St Georges might be a bit expensive !! Mind you if you are on better money.:) Hayling Island in Hampshire is quite reasonable though.

the job offer is in hampshire, fareham, so hayling is a possiblity

i guess it's just that burnham has 2 courses, membership fees are just over £1k, and its 5 minutes from my house, if i fancy walking there :)

even i could join another links course the membership fees are likely to be higher, chances are i will be living further away and it won't have 2 courses, - which almost guauntees me a game at any time, its hard for me to leave...

Hayling would be perfect. Nice course, and clubhouse, and the only links course for miles. Mind you don't discard heathland courses. My course has only been closed once over the winter for rain. We did close for the snow for a few days. In my opinion the best courses in Hampshire are, Liphook, Hayling, Blackmoor, Stoneham and North Hants. Further into Dorset you have Parkstone, Ferndown, Broadstone and Brockenhurst.

An excellent list Richard. The only omission (and I know it is in Surrey which is probably why!) in my view is Hindhead. A lovely course and one you could easily be a member of if you were based in Fareham.

hayling sounds good i must admit i "assumed" it would be expensive as it's the closest top course too southampton and portsmouth , supply and demand and all that, i may not be able to get in without a recommenadation, i also don't think it has 2 courses.

i guess im saying burnham, is right on my door step relativeley inexpensive and has great facilties hard to beat, unless i move to scotland or braunton

giving i love golf im prepared to turn down a better job to enjoy my free time more

edit to add i will look into hayling a bit more now thanks

offer doesn't expire until august

I'm playing in a club match at Gullane 1 in a couple of weeks, 2 rounds a dinner. Looking forward to it, last time i played there it was blowing so hard all the flags were out.

might stay over and play a few others on the Monday/Tues.

Yeah I played Gullane No.3 on thursday just gone, Ive also played No.2 hopefully get No.1 played near the end of the year. Ive also got the West Links at North Berwick on Wednesday.

Great course! The Glen is worth playing also if you have the time.

Being in the Borders, have you played the Roxburghe?

Heard the other week that Stephen Gallagher has joined Gullane so he can practice on the Par 3's on no.3

Yeah played the Glen a few times. Love the 13th but the course as a whole is fun to play.

And no not yet have herd it is good but haven't had the chance yet, was going to play it the other week but my playing partner couldn't get his clubs, but its on the list to play. The pro there must be good too, he's one of the top 25 for Bunkered magazine this year.

Hayling is a great track and our membership fees are no more than anywhere else in the area. It's in very good condition (has been all winter) and it's only been closed one weekend when we had the snow (late Jan/ early Feb?) Quite a lot going on to improve the course even further with a new tee on 17th, some bunker renovation work to put in a few more and reshape some existing ones and also a new green being built on the 2nd to make the hole play more as a dogleg.

The future at Hayling is very bright
