Links golf is just soooooo dull

Just read this - wtf. Links golf is THE test of golf. Essentially parkland woodland courses can all be played exacgly the same, links offers variety of shots and conditions.
Maybe it really is ability based as every cat 1 that has posted, and can be identified as such, golfer swears by it................
Could be that when tested some golfers with higher hcps prefer their game improvement courses with a touch more forgiveness!

Watching the best golfers in the world have to land 50yds short and rely on a 'lucky bounce'. What a rubbish game. At least they land on the greens at Augusta (even though they too are super fast).

Empty stands, no feature holes and scores that resemble a monthly medal comp at my gaff and I'm finding the whole process rather boring to watch AGAIN.

Sure I want Tiger to win but this 'teeing off with irons' malarky just isn't the golf that we know and love. Hitting irons off tees is making the whole process even MORE boring, there's actually nothing exciting to watch

Another utterly clueless post from the forums top clueless poster.

I must admit that I am loving the open. I have not played the course and from reading a lot and seeing reviews, I suspect that I would prefer other more dramatic venues - Royal County Down top of the wish list - but what a great tournament - and great fast conditions. The course has gone up in my estimations and would love to play - but there are several ahead of it. I just hope that Lee can hold it together and break his duck!:)

Anyone remember the 'Duel in the Sun'?

What kind of weather did they have?

What condition was the course in?

it is a fact that only the real shotmakers have won at Muirfield- no lucky streak johnny no-name who just fires the ball at soft targets day in day out.

P.S congratulation JO, nice fishing trip

P.P.S Ivor Robson is the dullest thing there, announcing with a Worthers Original swirling around.

..and the fishing continues, caught a few as well

I am really enjoying The Open............. But play links golf every week - not a chance!

And before I'm classed as one of those who hasn't tried it I've played Littlestone, Royal Cinque Ports, Walmer and Kingsdown and Princes (some a few times) and I would much rather play Wentworth, Sunningdale, etc etc. any day of the week

I get why the pros are hitting irons but for 18 holes it becomes boring. The driver should be encouraged at some point but the penalty is too severe here. With the run these irons are going further than even forum members hit the big dog. I just don't like the lack of variety or options off the tee

I must av been watching a different tournament as I've seen quite a few hitting driver off the Tee. Westwood even hit driver off the fairway.

Mind if I ask why?

Flat boring terrain, wind generally dominates play, the game is played along the ground, rough that if you miss a fairway by inches swallows up your ball and is never seen again. I've played it many times but play, say Littlestone or Sunningdale I don't think you can beat trees, grass, heather and despite everyone telling me that links golf is a true test, sorry, I'd rather be a woosie!

A short Welsh golfer?

And another thing.......until you get there you really have no idea just how tough the course is set up.

It's in beautiful condition but by christ the rough is brutal and you don't need to be that far off line to be dead.

Shows you how good these men are.Even those at 10 over deserve a huge golf clap.

The only form of golf worth talking about.

Flat boring terrain? You really need to get over to some of the courses in the north west coast of Ireland. Does wind not matter on your course? Or the rough that is not really the rough.

The best I heard was there was no skill involved in links as it was all purely luck

I know nothing about golf and am not very good at it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying watching it and really looking forward to seeing how it pans out tomorrow, but I'm far from convinced about links golf being the best test.

On a parkland, if I have 160 to the flag and overhit by 5 yards I've got a 15' putt.
On links I could decide that I need to land the ball at 130 to let it run out to the hole, overhit by 5yds and end up perfect if I've miss-judged the roll out.
It seems to me like misreading a putt and still holing it because I can't hit the line I've chosen.

I can understand why people like it, but don't understand their derision for people that don't.

I also think some people are jumping on the links bandwagon just because it seems cool.

Totally Disagree with your post?
Links golf is the ultamite challange in golf? Natural fairways and proper rough that sorts the men from the boys.
Have you personaly played a links course?
No feature holes you say? Links courses have 18 feature holes sculpted from the land that we walk on day in day out.
Scores that resemble a monthly medal? You might need to review your GAFF!

Teeing off with an iron? You hit an iron 90% on par 3s and hitting an iron fairway wood you get more control over the shot than thrashing a drive and leaving yourself between clubs.
Tiger hasn't hit a driver all week? So a bit contradicting there.

Because they are real men and real golfers and those of us they prefer non links golf are clearly little boys living in their shadows!

It makes me laugh some of the comments on here a couple I've seen referring to those that dislike links golf as not proper golfers, not good enough to play links or needing to get out more! Whatever happened to intelligent people simply knowing what they like and being able to say what they prefer! Nope on this thread if you don't like links golf then your a) not cool b) no real golfer & c) not good enough.

I've played links golf and scored well in tough conditions hitting irons off 17 tees does that make me a man! Err No because I didn't find it overly interesting or enjoyable I prefer a tight tree lined fairway where some holes are damned hard and others offer me the choice of risk reward.

I'm happy to say my names Fader and i'm not a fan of links dullness...... Go on someone have a pop now I've put it out there that I am clearly not a real golfer

The op was deliberately antagonistic, designed to get a rise out of some members. It got the reaction it was looking for.

Which boring links courses have you played?

If I had to choose it would be heathland followed by links. There too many average parkland tracks, it dilutes the experience.

The fact the open is always played at a links must carry some weight

Fader, can I please use this ^ to answer the critism of my earlier posting.

Thanks!

Have played Royal Cinque Ports, Littlestone a few weeks back, North Foreland and played Lahinch last year on a freebie as guest of HIDs uncle that lives right across from it & played Royal North Wales when visiting my Kids back in May. I've also been to RSG for all 4 days of the open when big Darren won. Ok fair enough maybe I've not played enough of it or enough courses but nothing makes me have the urge to want to play more or play others.

As for the open comment I don't think it does have to have any weight in my decision on whether I like it or not I have my own mind in that respect. They choose to have it at links as its the tournament tradition and wouldn't dare to have the courage to mix it up by throwing in a heathland or parkland course. When I watch majors for me the US Open & PGA are the best as the courses really do mix it up by that's just IMO everyone entitled to a different one and people on here need to accept that rather than berate anyone that doesn't like links for the sake of being a real golfer.
