Played today in a Seniors' comp where the tees were so far forward that in total we were approx 185 yds less than the measured course.

Am I right in thinking that this should NOT have been a qualifier?

Chapter and verse (if I'm right - and if I'm wrong) please rules gurus.

Approx 185 yards ? That seems more than just "approx" seems fairly accurate, how did you come to this figure ?

Not strictly correct. Can reduce/increase by up to 100yards without further authority or action. But can reduce/increase by up to 300yards if SSS is adjusted and the national authority is notified. Congu unified handicapping system rule 13.

The SSS should be reduced by 1 if the shortening is due to a legitimate reason (eg temporary work on the course). Otherwise the round would not be approved as a qualifier.

Why was it so much shorter?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I think that for "unimportant" comps (most Seniors, midweek Stablefords, etc) the green keepers are left to put the markers where-ever they think best, probably taking into account grass wear on the tee, poor old guys can't hit the ball very far so we'll make it a bit shorter for them, etc, etc. i.e. no-one who run the comps can be bothered to give them guidance. There were several tee positions some 20 yds + in front of the yellow plates, almost on the reds.

Cabby - I paced each one out and knowing that my pace is approx 1 yd I added up the total at the end of the round to give an approx total yardage. I know I should have used GPS or laser so I could give you an exact yardage but didn't really feel the need for it in the context of the query.

Well done you though only you know why you felt it necessary to pace things out while I'm sure the rest just carried on enjoying their round.

There is too much of this happening these days -

"The Seniors have difficulty in playing to their handicaps. We won't upset them by increasing them so we'll make the course easier."

I've played a few seniors matches recently and I think quite a lot are playing off false handicaps, granted we're all entitled to a bad day but you can clearly see how far they don't hit the ball that they ain't playing to certain handicaps and that's with 8 weeks of no rain.

If only....the vets league we play in has the rule that the club's normal medal tees have to be used for matches and any knockout rounds. So when they get to us it's 6800+...

On the other hand, as you point out, we play our senior friendlies from closer to 6400, and have recently had additional green tees installed and rated so we play senior Q comps from those as well.

Unfortunately the net result is further fuel to the argument that you can't properly handicap most bogey golfer to anything other than a handicap for a particular course and tees....accepting that the slope system tries very hard to do so!
