Hi All,
After some advice and reccommendations please. My other half has decided to take up golf but wants to learn in the sun. So thinking about a week holiday in Apr/May/June somewhere in the med. A place where they can get a daily lesson as part of a weeks structured set from a good professional who is happy to take an absolute beginner. Ideally near a beach. Perhaps also with a pitch and put 9 hole course to practice on. Has anyone done something similar? Any tips, locations to go or not go?
Thanks

The idea that you can learn golf in one sunny week seems ... a little optimistic :D

Anyway,
Beginner-friendly golf academy, 9 hole course with all sorts of standards of golfer, and beach, all walkable on site? Pine Cliffs in Algarve springs to mind.

Thank you. I'm not expecting miracles, just a good grounding to start. I know that it takes a long time and a lot of work to have a chance of becoming proficient!

Damn, I thought this was going to be a topic for advice on how to play holes into the sun where it's blinding you, that would've been really helpful.
Get your playing partners to stand at the side and take full responsibility for ball spotting. And whatever you do, don’t look up!

Have a look at Penina, great hotel near Alvor, mid way along the Algarve. Big swimming pool and beach club too.

Has a great driving range and chipping area. A 9 hole short course, a 9 hole resort course and the 18 hole main course.

They offer beginners courses, worth an email penina@jjwhotels.com

Lots of Uk operators go there, I'd be speaking to Mark Vyner at Supertravel Golf.

La Noria near La Cala is a short 9 hole course, but will probably be busy. Plenty of clubs round there to visit with decent ranges but I couldn't recommend you a pro for lessons.

When we lived over there - Jamie had lessons with Victor Andreu at La Finca, he coached kids from the very start so would have no issues taking on a complete beginner. The practice facilities there are fantastic as well.

La Finca is a great course as well if you get the opportunity to play it.

There's also a really good minigolf centre a few kms down the road if you want to lighten the mood with some fun golf. The did have a very basic pitch and putt course there as well, but it's not shown on there website now so may have been ditched.

Another pro I'd recommend is Pearse McMurray at Vistabella - he runs a 'beginners to winners' programme which basically takes expats who have retired over there, and decided to take up golf. I always had a job understanding his accent, but his ethos for building a golf swing was all about tempo - and he does have lovely golf swing himself. He never let me pay for a range ball if he saw me up there with Jamie - good guy.

Other than the course I mentioned at Greenlands - the only other short 9 hole courses I can think of over there would have been at El Plantio,

and the one at Elche - which to be honest, is perfect for a beginner.

You would need to hire a car to get between all these places, but you'd have everything you need to meet all the criteria you have specced. Loads of accommodation in the area as well to choose from.
