Lancashire / Preston / Leyand Clubs - any recommendations

Hi

I am considering taking up golf for the first time, Im in my mid 40s. I am not sure if this is allowed but could anyone recommend a good, friendly golf club in the central lancs / Preston area.

Hi Harry,
From your post it sounds as though you haven't played at all before? If this is the case then I'd certainly say you should spend some time on the municipal facilities in the area to make sure you are happy that golf is for you. Otherwise you could pay out quite a lot but not stick at it. Duxbury Park in Chorley, Beacon Park/Haigh Hall both Wigan way are all good and to the north Garstang has a decent pay and play too.

If you have already been playing and are keen to join a club then it really is a personal choice. I'd write to a few, see if they have any open days on or just ask if you can have a look around. Try to get to play a few first through friends etc. Most courses are wanting members and few will have waiting lists. My personal favourites in the area would be Preston GC (aka Fulwood), Penwortham, Leyland, Chorley and Pleasington (near Blackburn)

Thats good advice from Fyldewhite, first you must be sure that this game is for you because it can become expensive.

Now I'm a southerner but I had the pleasure of a short holiday near Lancaster a couple of years ago and found a club east of Preston called Longridge. I had a fabulous round there on a quite Tuesday morning in glorious weather although just a little windy. But I found everyone friendly and helpful and it was a smashing little course.
If you are serious in taking up this game Longridge is well worth a visit.

Hi Harry, welcome to the forum & the wonderful world of golf, all of the above mentioned clubs are very nice, one other that i can mention if you fancy pushing the boat out a bit is Shaw Hill at Whittle le woods (Chorley). Ingol is ok for cheap & cheerful(£15 weekends) but i have to say value for money (£18 weekends) & simply a fantastic course for any level of golfer is Duxbury Park just outside Chorley, well worth a visit.
If you don't want to jump in at the deep end as at some point all these courses you will need some big firepower there is a small 9 holer at Charnock Richard called Yarrow Valley it's a really well kept course with 8 par 3s & a par 4, nice to start off on & good value for money.

Welcome to the Forum I agree with Warren,Yarrow Valley is a super little course with well kept greens, It`s where I started playing.

I play regularly at Duxbury,and if you are a "real" beginner you may find it a little daunting.

I would give ingol a miss because it's only just re-opened after about 5 years and is a right mess no matter what the owners tell you. Preston is expensive and a bit snooty as is Shaw hill. Fishwick is in excellent condition and i believe offering a free game just so people can see what great condition its in. but please give Ingol a miss it will put you off the game for life.
