Well you will be more nearly correct next year if you take a 2 stroke penalty. You are really cheating yourselves by thinking you played better than you did really.

We have this in my group
We play for fun but try to play to as many rules as we can
So lost ball.
We try to hit a provisional if we think it might be lost however benefit of the doubt is always that we will find it.
If lost then we drop and play 3. Personally I don’t agree with this as you gain a shot from not hitting a provisional however it’s what we have always played and I have benefitted as much as the others.
There is no way we would go back to the tee and given that we all want to keep the game moving this is basic etiquette to others.
The new rules make this a lot clearer and we will start playing 4 instead of 3 however until that time our rules are our rules and that is good enough for me.
Enjoy the game. Play fairly to the rules you want to and the best or even the luckiest will win.....

Played in Mauritius a few years ago and played with three French guys who were covering the Mauritius open for French TV that was being played on the course. One of the three smashed his ball massively OOB. They said between them " Drop a ball at the side of the furthest ball back on the fairway". Mine as it happened. He played his third from the side of mine. It worked well. So much so, when we go on our jaunts to Northumberland and Norfolk, that's what we do. It keeps the pace of the game going. ðŸ‘

I know what he is asking. My answer would be drop near to where it was lost and play 4 from there. Me and my playing partners use this when having a knock round cause we play stroke play.
