Hi All..in a 3 ball today guy hit his drive into rough on a par 4 he didnt play a provisional.. the ball was declared lost by all in the group including the guy who hit it. Should he be playing 3 or 4 from this position ? He reckoned 3 we reckoned 4 as he wasnt going back to the tee .who is right ? Many thanks in advance.

If he doesn't hit a provisional and the ball is lost - you can't declare it lost, it just becomes lost because you can't find it after five minutes - then his only option is back to the tee to play 3

None of you - back to the tee he goes or off to the Nigerian Railway!

(a) Nobody can declare a ball lost. It's lost 5 minutes after you start looking for it. (b) This optional local rule doesn't come in until 1st January 2019. If it were in now, the answer is 4

Yeah we looked for it for 5 mins..ball gone...there was no way he was going back to the tee

How many people do you know who have not played a provisional..lost a ball and off they trip back to the tee ? Nobead

As it’s the rules of golf then everyone will go back to the tee unless they want to either NR the comp or Blob the hole if in Stableford but no one takes a drop there

But most I know will take a provisional ball if there is a chance of it being lost

There’s a difference between “mates having a game” and a competition under the proper rules. I would be shocked if anyone walked back to a tee in a social game. That’s why scoring those stableford is the way to go... blob and walk on.

With the former, just be consistent with each other... for the latter, it’s in the book!

Any need for the childish language?

In answer to your question, anyone playing in a proper golf competition plays to the rules. So if they were stupid enough to not hit a provisional, when their first ball might be lost, they would HAVE to walk back to the tee. So, on here, lots of people would of seen lots of people make the trudge back to the tee throughout their playing days.

As you're a weekend hacker and not playing a comp you can make your own rules up I guess as long as everyone in the group is happy.

Me for starters. When, in a comp we all thought we knew where the ball was but then we couldn't find it.
I then walked back to play another. I
And if you're going to insult, spell it right. I'm not sure what No Bead means.

For us nobeads if one us us is daft enough to not play a provisional then they are playing 4 or they can go back to the tee and play 3 and can piss off the pringle wearing nobead members brigade follwing behind who wont be playing through ...that would seem fair.

In answer to your original question, for a social non under the correct rules of the game, your playing partner should be playing 4 not 3. (y)
