Morning all.

Recently joined the forum after being recommended by a friend and just thought I'd introduce myself.

My name is Gareth and I'm 28 years old. My local course is Blythe Bridge GC in Stoke-on-Tren and I've been playing (seriously)for around 10 months.

Having started playing off 28 handicap, I currently play off 24 (23.9)having played and carded 3 club competitions (winning one having shot an 81 (57 net)) and I'm hoping to crack 20 by the end of the year. To be fair Im currently playing alot better than my handicap suggests, having recently shot a 75 and 76 so maybe 20 is not low enough, but still, gives me something to aim at. I can reassess when I get there.

I always have a open-minded attitude to advice and do not take constructive critisism to heart.

So, there's my introduction. If you want to know any more, just post.

Welcome aboard, Gareth.

I see you ran out of imagination when it came to registering your forum name as well, then.

;) ;)

Good shooting for a newbie to the game, by the way. It takes some people 20 years to get that good. Shark alert!

Hi John

Yes, pretty much ran out of imagination as regards my forum name, but then again, I like to keep things simple so it kind of made sense.

As regards my Handicap and recent scores. They are genuine I asure you. The course I play is not very big at all (just over 4500 yards), but it is very tight so it kind of balances out. Like I say. If I break 20 by the end of the year I'll be a happy man.

Stephen.

I've already found it quite informative and I'm looking forward to reading more (and helping if I can)

Hi Gareth,

Welcome along mate.

Sounds like you have a natural talent if you're bringing your scores down this quick regardless of the course.

Have you played anywhere with yards around 6,000?

Just be interested to see what you'd shoot round there.

Can I ask what par your course is over 4500 yards?

You'll be very addicted to this site I promise :)

Hey MKDave.

Yes I played Hawkstone Park in Shropshire not long ago (November 2010). I played both the Championship (6793 yard Par 72) and "Old" course (6491 Yard Par 72) as a 2 day corporate event. Shot 98 and 95 respectivley, alothough I did prefer the "Old" course to the Championshiop course.

The course I play, as I said, is small. Its only a Par 62 however there are course changes taking place at the minute to take it up at a Par 66, with further changes planned to take it upto aPar 68.

Oh I'm already addicted to the site believe me.

Welcome along. I'm also pretty new on here, but as yet I haven't managed to break 100, and I can't get a handicap untill my course if back onto ordinary tees.

Good stuff mate.

It's always difficult to make a comparison when the par is that different but like I say you've clearly got ability so reckon you could take loads off your handicap this summer.

All the best mate and keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for that.

Like I said. the only target I've set myself is breaking 20 before the end of the coming season. If I break it before the end, I'll re-evaluate at that time.

Best thing to do is if you feel your sub 20 handicap is your main goal then just set to breaking that and maintaining it. If you come to end of year even lower that's a bonus but if you keep moving the goalposts you'll only set yourself up for a fall.

10 months into the game means you have LOADS of time to keep bringing it down.

I'm off to Aus in April so am just enjoying playing at the moment. Not really working on anything to much just playing as much as I can and no goal for this year. I'm playing pretty good golf at present (bar the putting) and really want to work when I get back to improving my game.

I really feel within a couple of years of hard graft and lessons I could reduce my handicap significantly. Single figures is my long term goal and I know I will achieve that at some point. Just playing for leisure at the moment rather than trying to improve drastically.
