Chaps,

What's your club like with juniors entering all club competitions?
I for one am all for it and we've got a batch of juniors that have just got into the magic under 28 handicap. Would be good to see them cause some waves in the medals...!

Just looking for what other clubs do regarding this.

Ta muchly!

CK

when i was a junior you could get what they called a junior senior membership where if you're handicap was single figures you could play in all the gents medals, competitions but you couldn't win them.

it was ideal for playing as much as possible to reduce the handicap.

Sorry but for me juniors should play in their own comps, playing in adult comps shouldn't happen, they have their own section and should stay there until they are old enough to join the main comps.

I think it's a good thing. It helps to integrate them into the club, and providing they are not grouped with the resident club thrower it can help teach them etiquette.

I would tend to agree that they should not be eligible for the prizes, though, as when they are learning the game they tend to improve somewhat quicker than their handicaps reduce! We had a medal at our place last year when 5 juniors topped the prizes, all having shot nett 64 or better, with the winning score being a nett 56.

No, no and no. They have their own comps, they can play those.

Junior comps are won with scores like 54 points stable ford. That is beyond most adults, by miles. They get 3 months of the year when they can practice 17 hours a day, their handicaps cannot keep up. Not their fault, but no, they should not be playing in adult board comps.

Let the kids play. Not their fault the moaning old gits haven't got any talent for the game.

So what if they scoop the prizes!!! A tin pot and £50 in the pro shop, not exactly the Race to Dubai is it!

Ah, the lucid, eloquent argument of many a man who is scared of getting humped by a junior who can blast the ball way past him off the tee, has no fear with the putter (yet) and probably has a short game to die for given all the practice around the putting green juniors seem to do.

If the Juniors have a proper CONGU handicap and are playing regularly in order to maintain their handicap, then I don't see why they shouldn't be able to play in Gents Medals.

Yes, yes & most definitely yes! Get them in, get them integrated, manage their handicaps properly via junior/mid week comps in the summer. How many times have we heard, "we've got some great juniors... blah blah blah" yet those very same clubs/members that brag about their juniors are quite often the ones that want the kids shunted off out of the way. How many times have we heard kids are the future of the game/club, and then they've treated like crap...

As a Junior organiser a number of years ago I argued for the integration in all comps bar board comps, although they could enter the Club Championship. During the summer holidays I organised a mid week comp for them, and adjusted their handicaps. They also got an adjustment virtually every Saturday in the Gents comps. 5 years later they were the backbone of the Gents scratch team that won the district team knockout for the first time. Managed properly those juniors are an asset to the club, and if not managede properly its the club's fault, not their's.

Sorry but as a battle scarred junior of the late 60's early and 70's I can tell you its no fun being on the receiving end of the hostility many so called gentlemen dish out.

Is the correct answer.

The attitude of many adult golfers towards Juniors is nothing short of shocking.

Is it any wonder golf gets a stuffy reputation with the attitude shown by many?

Totally agree DCB. I was a junior when I started playing and loved playing in all the medals and taking the money off the old boys.:)

Mind you when I had my only good board competition round last year, and was beaten into second place by a junior with a net 58 I was ready to revise my opinion ! At least I got the sweep to console myself with.

Let them play, subject to the same handicap limits of the other members I.e. nothing over 28hcp

The only exception for me would be the board comps and championship.

For that, the juniors should have their own versions.

Cheers

Why not in the club championship??

The idea is to find the best golfer in the club (on that day). It's a scratch event so "false" handicaps aren't an issue.

It would make a mockery of the club champ if I was picking up the trophy knowing that a number of good players were excluded by the mere fact of their age rather than the scores they produce.

Hmmm, I know several single figure adults who could play in the juniors comps and scoop the prizes easily, is that right though, I'm no mug at the game myself by the way, I'm no rabbit.
I still say when they are old enough let them play in the adults comps if they win then good on them then.

My old club allowed juniors to play in adult comps once their hc was less than 18. We wasn't allowed to tee off before 1pm at weekends (our tee slot) unless we were joining other adults.

Theyre allowed in all our comps, and the club and the juniors are better for it imo so all for it.

As a junior I had 2 clubs, one which allowed us to play comps and the other which alienated us from the club pretty much - the latter recently went bust as their ageing membership slowly died off

I said that the Juniors should have their own board comps and championship, that way they have a value added membership.

If you would like Juniors on an equal footing with equal rights to play in board comps and championship as full members then all good with me, providing they pay the same membership fees as me.

We have juniors playing in our normal medals etc and in our roll ups.

I have never been a junior golfer so cannot speak from that perspective.

Hope that clears up any misunderstanding.

Absolutely - as soon as they have got a handicap

Juniors , men and women should all play together.

CAn't believe teh snoobishness here. i see a correlation with those clubs that do Medal Comps without a draw, i.e.e so the same miserable groups play with their same mates eveery week, which leads to behaviours like not knowing the rules

Not wishing to sound unsociable, but they have their competitions (if not enough, then that's something the junior captain should be sorting out) and the adult members have their comps.
I'm pretty sure most Juniors (and ladies) would think it strange if the men started wanting to play in their comps

sorry doc but thats total toilet. surley their level of golf skill should allow them to play equal in comps, not the ammount of membership fees they pay, thats descrimination against age and if nothing else total crap!

If a junior beat me to take a majors comp win, id think fair play to him.,.. not " he doesnbt pay the same fees as me "
