My 13 year old son, who has had a good summer this time, He started off 25 now down to 19. Not bad. I've been thinking about getting him some lessons for over the winter.
Do I send him to our club pro or do I send him to the local golf school. The golf school is £145 for 3 days in October, were as I think if I paid our club pro the same money my son would learn more.
What do you think?

I would say he's going to get more from one to one sessions with the pro.

We've just finished our summer programme of junior coaching at my club. The Junior members get a series of weekly sessions which over the course of 12 weeks will cover all parts of their game.

However, the group teaching scenario is only able to give each a small amount of one to one coaching. A golf school would be similar to this I feel.

I have attended golf coaching at Inverclyde in the past and although very good, I do feel that one to one sessions with my own pro would be my prefered option for both myself and my daughter in the future rather than a golf school type event.

Hope this helps.

my club holds regular 'golf schools', and the pro's are particularly good at coaching the kids. these schools though seem to be aimed more at bringing the kids up to a reasonable standard, thereafter they get their coaching either one-on-one or, more economically, in smaller groups (two or three of a similar standard).
I would think your son would be in the latter category.

Imo, there's no yes or no answer to this.
It's up to your son.
Does he like being with a gang of friends and a bit of banter or does he prefer to stay on his own or just one or two friends.
He may prefer the 1-1 instruction or the big group having a laugh with his mates and learning at the same time.
Ask him what he would prefer :)

It sounds like he's either a natural golfer (he's improving quickly) or he's soaking up advice like a sponge, or both.
When I was that age I felt I learned more from just watching other golfers and focusing on the basics. My dad payed for lessons for me when I was that age and to be honest it was a waste of money, I was too immature to really act on the advice given to me. I felt the tutor was telling me to swing or grip etc. in a way that didn't feel natural so I went right back to my old ways.
Your son may be more mature and less stubborn than I was, in which case if you're sure it will have no detrimental effect, maybe just a 1 on 1 with the pro to begin with?

My 12 year old went to group lessons, and whilst this brought him up to a good basic standard, he was affected by the different attitudes of other members of the group who didn't want to learn as much as he did affected his desire to go. Consequently we play more together now, and at the appropriate time I'll get him 1-1 with the pro (or maybe we'll go together!!)

cheer's guys, I think he'll be going for the 1-1 lesson's. The point being made about him messing about with the others struck me. He can easily be mislead. The other thing if someone was there hitting the ball 250+ he'd be trying the same. Yeah 1-1 looks good

Thanks again guys

i'm fourteen and to be honest i'd much prefer a teaching from a pro but it'd best be lessons ever so often as when went for just a one hour lesson the pro piled so many tips onto me in that session that by the end I could barely remember any.

I started at the same age as your son and our club used to run a saturday club. It was an hour in a group of about 10 so all in all you only get about 5 mins to let the pro have a look at what your doing.
Personally I think group lessons are a good idea but they will never be able to match a 1-on-1 lesson. my game really started to develop once id started having regular 1-1 lessons with a pro.
