Hi there …..

Penny for your thoughts ..??

I rejoined my local club in May and was hacking it round to + 20 …. After plenty of practice and plenty of golf in the summer Ive managed to get much better and now managing to get round in + 10 /12 .
Question is I have some Ping G 400 irons (Game improvement irons I think ) should I look to upgrade my irons …???? Target for 2025 is single figure index 🤞

Any suggestions on irons ??

Cheers

My thoughts probably worth only a halfpenny.

I've been using Ping G10 3&4 irons and Ping i10 5-PW since 2008 and my HI is 4.6

I don't know a great deal about the latest clubs, but ...
If you find what you are looking for, let me know what you would like for the G400s as I would like to upgrade my irons by 10 years and get down to 3.0 ;)
What colour dot are they?
;)

More seriously.
You will be upgrading your irons by about 6 years, if buying brand new. New irons might not be a as significant an improvement as you are hoping for.
I would give the G400s another year or two.
Your Ping irons should hold their value fairly well. Most Pings seem to do so.

Better advice is sure to follow about custom fitting etc to get the very best clubs for you.

I wonder what will get you from +10/12 to lower.

Are you driving straight and long. How is your short game. Is your putting decent.

I'd be looking at the quickest score improvement and that may not be your irons.

The first place to start is

"what is wrong with your current clubs for you"
Do you not like the wider sole, are you trying to work the ball more and think this will be achieved with a club with fewer GI features.

What part of the game is costing you the shots, is it down to something other than the irons down to about 9 iron (short game ?) ?

PS I got my handicap down to mid single figures using TaylorMade 360s which at the time were their game improvement version of the 300 series.

I've just upgraded my irons, they were 8 years old , really nothing wrong with them .. still in great condition

If you want to upgrade go for it however if you can live with them for longer I don't think will harm you

The majority of shots dropped by higher handicappers are off the tee and around the greens. You already have decent irons, if you want to get lower look at these parts of your game. Course management is also vital. If you slice the ball, aim left. Don't aim straight at the flag and expect the ball to go straight.

Unless you've started to dislike the look, sound/feel or you're feeling you're leaving something on the shelf performance wise I'd probably stick.
G400s are pretty decent irons but are now 7 years old...they'll never wear out though...G irons are made of the hardest substance in the known universe.
But there will have been a shift in performance compared to G430
Might be worth getting a fitting done just to see if you can gain a bit of yardage or tighten the dispersion but don't feel you have to change..

Go and see a decent club pro or fitting centre and try as many clubs as you can. Compare numbers to the clubs you have and then make a decision. If you use a pro it may be obvious there are more gains to be had with better technique than equipment

If you're planning on making any swing changes with a coach do that first, the clubs you get fitted in now likely won't be the same as the ones that you'll be fitted into after a couple of lessons.
