I've decided against joining a club in West Yorkshire as my circumstances have changed so I'm moving back to Doncaster.

I've decided to try and join Hickleton Golf club. I called in last night and the membership runs from 1st October until 30th September 2015. So good timing :)

They offer a reduced rate for 25's and its right in the middle of work and home:D

But all I wanted to know is how much do you get judged based on your application form?

There is one section that says please complete below with a reason that may enhance your application. Should i just put I LOVE GOLF!!!!!!! hahaha. only joking.

I'm pretty nervous regarding filling in the form and having an interview so any tips out there on making a good first impression and hopefully joining the club?

Cheers

Good luck, I am joing my first 'members only' club at the moment, had my play in yesterday and interview on Monday. I have found everyone in the process really helpful and friendly so dont feel intimidated by it all. In fact the guy I was played in by yesterday, we played a match against each other about 10 years ago.

Hickleton is a nice club to join. 1st hole is demanding.

Truth is that they offer a reduced rate as they need new members so you wont need to enhance your application form at all. Just fill it in and then enjoy your membership. They are not going to turn anyone away so if you have an interview its not going to be a grilling.

Not being glib, but most clubs just want your cash these days!!
I Was thinking a similar thing. I'll fill it in now and scan it in and get it sent back.
But rather join a club for 1 year with reduced rates see how I like it, before the scale jumps up once I'm over 25.
So hopefully from 1st October onwards i can host and i will have a handicap so can play at other forum members courses too.
exited :D

It's true that many are just after your cash but if this place meets all your requirements and ticks your needs then go for it. Nothing better than getting in, playing comps and getting involved

Good luck with joining a new club. Not sure about the application process as I did everything in person when I joined the club I am at now. I think in general things are always more daunting before you do them so just get stuck in. I used to live in Barnsley and would pass hickleton whenever I went to my grandmas at Marr. It's one I have always wanted to play but just never got round to it.

If I get accepted can always give me a message and go for a game

As has been said, no need to bend over backwards, cheque attached will do all that is required.

In my experience, the term 'interview' is misleading, it is really an opportunity for the club sec to explain how the club works, tee and comp booking arrangements, anything in place to bring new members into the club etc etc etc. so 'welcome briefing' is really a better expression.

As others have mentioned, they will probably be more nervous that you don't go ahead and join than you should be. So take the the opportunity to ask some questions yourself that are relevant to you and see if it is the kind of place you feel you'd really enjoy.

Don't go into it thinking they are doing you a massive favour and forget, or ever feel a bit nervous about asking for clarification on anything you want to know. Ideally both sides will get a lot out of your joining and it will be a win win.:D

Forms are sent in, just have to see when they can arrange the meet and greet session before you sign up.
got until 1st Oct before the membership starts so all good.

Regarding the handicap I understand I need to play with an existing member and submit 3 cards. Does this have to be during a comp on the White tees. Or can it just be a round when it suits as long as its off the whites? I want to get my handicap as soon as possible and then I have a target to beat.

doesn't have to be a comp or off white tees.

enjoy :)

Think it must be club dependant- in mine needs to be 2 medals off of whites, then one bounce game from yellows

My club will accept 3 cards off yellows. I presume things are adjusted allowing for the fact they are off yellows and not whites.

The days of formal interviews, proposing and seconding etc for most clubs are long gone. As someone posted earlier any meeting is likely to be a briefing rather than a grilling. I handed in my form and cheque, was immediately given a membership book, bag tag, locker room key and wished all the best. This from a club that 5 years ago had a waiting list, joining fee, interview for membership, the lot. Times have changed.
