Lampard has one season left, maybe two. Van Ginkel will probably be brought on as his future replacement, Moses will be loaned out to see if he can improve to the level required to be anything other than a squad player, Mikel is possibly on his way out, Essien probably only returned because no-one has made an offer for him contact will run down.
It's the end of one era (Lampard, Mikel, Essien), the start of another and a couple of speculative buys to avoid paying through the nose at a later stage. Is it a lot? maybe not. I think you could fairly describe some or all of Mata, Hazard, Oscar and Schurrle as attackers rather than midfielders if you so choose, or if you view the modern game as a squad game, then with Jose's 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 set up & a 25 man Champions League squad, 8 - 10 midfielders in a squad isn't overkill.

Yes, me too, slightly embarrassing.
I think both Piazon & McEachran are on season long loans so won't figure in this season's head count, it is difficult to keep that many happy, but if anyone can, The Happy One can!!

Surely it's not the first time Moses has faced difficulty in front of him! He will find a way I'm sure...
I, like many others are concerned for Mata and do not understand his omission so far, but, great players in all teams will come and go and I, like many other Blue's, have to trust Jose and only at the end of season when we look back will those decisions become justified or not.
