American golf under new ownership.

It's a stupid name for a shop, it's got nothing to do with America at all. I guess the founder was trying to tap into the image of everything being bigger and better and shinier in America.
Back in the day you had Nevada Bobs another chain of golf shops, and it seemed to be the fashion to Americanise your golf shoppe

Bobs vanished years ago AG needs a rebrand and refocus

It started in the northwest in I think the eighties, possibly in Widnes. A chap came back from the states amazed at the price difference UK to US and so started importing and selling “American golf” imports. I believe that’s how it got its name. HQ is still in the north west in Warrington

Th first shop was on Manchester Road in Woolston, Warrington. It’s a Greggs now. Head office is still in Warrington on Birchwood retail park .

I’ve known a few people work there over the years. Not heard great things about them as an employer.

Went in this afternoon to have a look at ladies drivers/woods. First time in ages.

Asked them what they had in to try for ladies. I kid you not; they had one club (some nasty cheap silver thing out of a multi-set). Not even one type/brand; literally one club. That’s it.

Anything else they had to order in - but you had to buy in advance for them to do that. Why would I do that? Have fewer consumer rights than if ordering over internet; slower and less convenient too. Sure enough, we went home and ordered from a more competitively priced online retailer.

The whole place felt like a shop close to death - you know when they have absolute minimal stock because they don’t have the free capital to carry more inventory and suppliers won’t give them credit. We’ve all seen it. About 3x the floor space of my club pro shop but with less stock in.

If they can’t improve from this then they’ll be gone soon and I won’t miss them.
