Following on from the GG thread I had a look at my versus stats and noticed the rather large number of shots lost from short game and putting. In fact large is an understatement it's frankly obscene.

So it got me thinking about why that is. Well our greens are pretty slow which I'm not a massive fan of. But the main thing is most of our greens are upturned saucers and quite narrow. So if you miss left or right it can push you into the gorse or onto a path and then you have a delicate chip from not a great lie where it runs on more as the ball lands because it's above my feet...and please don't start me on our stone filled, compacted sandless bunkers!!!!

Anyway on reflection I need to work harder on difficult chip shots in practice and it got me wondering are there aspects of your course set up that negatively impact on your scoring?

My place has got some pretty brutally placed water on a few holes. And some of the greens are shaped with 2 tiers drop off points back left and right. But other than that I'd say it's challenging in places but friendly in others

We don't have many bunkers but most greens have mounding on 3 sides.
If you miss short you have a much easier chip to the flag
If you miss left, right or long you're normally chipping onto a downslope, which makes it harder...
On virtually all our greens you want to miss short.....mostly I miss right....or left....
With my short game I can afford to miss the green and still have a pretty good chance of par. But that chance is much better short of the green
Example..we have a downhill 200 yrd par 3 with mounds on 3 sides.
Unless it's really soft I've started taking a 6 or 5 iron, punting it down 10-20 yards short but straight.
Simple uphill chip'n'putt - job done.
It's a strategy that works on my course, rather than going for flags and missing left or right.
Just got to do it..

Missing greens isn't to punishing at ours unless it's into a bunker from height, all of our bunkers were relaid and fried eggs are very common

Other than that it's our rough.... It's brutal!

at my place if you avoid the bunkers you tend to score well, there are only a handful out of over 100 that you can do more than just get out.

Have you taken the plunge on a higher lofted wedge?

And those of you with water is it lateral. Carries over water are a pain but I'd rather a lateral hazard than OOB any day of the week

not played since TBH, its been too cold here and got a touch of the flu at the moment.

its a tricky one, have to either bite the bullet and take a club out to make way for the 60 which would only get used if i went on one of the 4 bunkers, or just go out backwards/sideways and keep what i have.

We have bunkers of variable quality and thick rough around most greens. The greens aren't huge compared to some places and the ball can really sit down in the rough which does limit the options. I want to hit more GIR in 2016 as I struggle with my short game (but working hard). My putting is OK so basically, chip better and hit more greens. I guess that could apply to many. Jason Dransfield posted a good practice regime about chipping on his website which if we ever get the practice green open again, I'll be working on
