Is this time of year the toughest to play.

Before I start I don't know the answer. I have not managed to play the last couple of weeks with Missis T being the way she is. I was smashing the course up during the winter and looking forward to playing. Having not been able to play, I have asked my regular PP how there rounds have gone and they have been moaning like the clappers, and I mean proper moaning.
the lowest score was 98 between the three of them.
They were moaning about the tees being right back on the white pots,, balls not carrying on fairways, pins in impossible positions.
They reckon that the difference between winter and summer has been to big to soon. Me I have had a bit of a chuckle about there moaning. But I was up at the course today with young Bradley Tash and Missis T. I bumped into an old pal from years ago and was talking about this and that and he was moaning like " Billy Ho" about the difficult course.
In the clubhouse whilst young Bradley was eating his cheesy chips and again an old work mate was sounding like an old lady coz he had just shot 104, plays off 17 and cannot remember the last time he shot in the 100's.
So is this time of year as tough as it is gonna get to get a decent score.

Depends on your game really. I think it's probably a bit easier at this time of year. Admitedly, I lose some run on the fairways but I don't struggle for distance, the rough is down, clean and place on fairways and the greens are softer and more receptive.

I don't think it's the toughest, but today definitely hasn't been an easy day for forum members who have posted their scores, apart from a few, it's been a bad one.

Agree with this 100%. Fortunately my drives carry enough distance so no roll isn't a massive issue. Receptive greens are IMO much easier to play too rather than trying to bounce in from 20 yards short and greens tend to roll slightly slower so makes putting easier.

Our greens are terrible at the moment due to dressing and tining. Other than that, I don't really worry. Yep, we aren't off the tomb stones yet, and that will add yardage, but I'm not fussed about yardage.

Was tough today, off the whites for the first time, rain coming down pretty much all through our round, not being a long hitter with practically no run didn't help either. Still enjoyed it though.

Hmm interesting question thoughts really

if it's not too windy and the greens are in good nick then I think it's the best time of the year to score well - so long as people have been practicing over winter.

Bit of a mix for me. I like the softer conditions playing into the green, ours are fairly small and gives the ball a chance to stop. However, the soft fairways Certainly reduce the roll out on drives with the ball stopping within a few inches of the deep pitch mark. Our first medal the other week had the whites pushed right back and the course was a bit soft, so I was a little surprised at the length they set it to, but I came in6 under handicap and won it so can't complain. Played in the monthly stableford yesterday, fairways still soft but greens firmed right up and a lot quicker, came in with 42 points and a blob off the cut I got two weeks back, not complaining now either. i guess the answer is no, I don't think it is particularly difficult unless the course is really boggy.

Easiest time of year for our course- they only cut the heavy goarse once a year in about 2 month if you hit in it you're dead

Feels easy to me at the moment. I have been playing all through winter and compared to that everything feels so much better now ... the greens are rolling well and true but are not yet too fast, rough is still kept nice and short, no leaves left on the ground that would make the ball difficult to find, fairways are finally cut to a playable length again etc. Plus we are currently still playing off the winter mats, so the holes are all a bit shorter than they will be in summer. I don't think it gets much easier than this.

It's that funny transition from wet (very wet at times this winter) where the ball plugs, rough is heavy and penal, to it drying out, the first hint of run of the tees (at my place at least) and the greens firming up and getting quicker. Our rough is getting lush and tough to be in.

I think this is a bit course specific. I know Norwood and on April 1st they whack the white pots right back for the comps like it was July the 1st. You don't get the fairway run this time of the year and generally the weather is still unsettled, rainy, windy etc so far from ideal conditions.
At my new course the white tees have re-appeared but far from full length, feels a little more gradual.

Just after maintenance week. No real growth yet. Bare lies. Quick and bobbly greens.

Ours is playing just about as difficult as it gets.

With the state of our greens at the minute its a bit rough.

But I was scoring brilliantly all winter, then one week before the season starts I've lost all resemblance of a swing!

Similar to my tail of woe.

I can't stand winter golf cos I can't take proper divots... 😀😀
